[WIP/Req] Project M.A.K.E.A.N.E.L.F.

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 2:18 pm

So, I started work on a pack of new races, but my graphics guy (who is awesome, and unbelievably patient with me) is bottled up on CoN...which is also facing delays. In the meantime, without stepping on my own toes, I decided to alleviate some of my boredom, and try to make a new race mod in the style of the planned race pack. Which is to say, Race + NPCs + Quest(s) + at least one companion, and anything else I get motivated to throw in.

For this race, I plan to make a race of pale, almost albino elves. I was listening to some folk music when I had the idea, so the concept is something gypsy. They're going to be a more or less RP-centric race. Very suboptimal abilities (noncombat or ineffective skills). So sorry to those that don't go for that sort of thing. I'm thinking scattered camps, much like the Ashlanders, but not really sure on placement yet.

Here's a concept outline:
Spoiler
Name (Meric): Lattamer
Common Name: Light Elf
Size: Small
Weight Light

It's pretty general right now. What I'm wondering, though, is does anyone know where I can get a BB template of sorts? I'm no good in Blender, so this should be...interesting, but I think I'm going to give it a go. Of course, if anyone is awesome enough to do the models and such for me...well my undying gratitude is pretty worthless, but you'll have it.

Children of the Night?

Why not just open up the standard altmer / bosmer / dunmer BB texture(s) and reduce the colour saturation down to almost white. Quick and (relatively) painless. Whether you'd want to also redden the eyes for the full on albino look might be a bit trickier but I'd've thought that'd work quite well for the body textures.

CoN = City of Nerevar

The big mod project that I'm (arguably) in charge of. [/shameless plug]

And yeah, that sounds relatively painless. I'm not sure it will get quite the results I'm hoping for, however. That and I think the main problem will be ears and hair. I'd like to go for something not copypasta of another race (though if I'm okay to use Ren's Dunmer hairs, they might do okay). Which brings another point in. I need to try to avoid my mod looking like restatting someone else's race. That I do not want.

Postmortem:

So...my computer hates Photoshop. With a passion it hates it. This surprises me greatly, since my PC, Photoshop, and I have been getting along fine for some time. However, recently something change. I don't know if Photoshop said something about my computer's mother, or my PC doesn't approve of Photoshop's lifestyle choices or it's a side effect of a Windows update, but for whatever reason it would seem that Photoshop is simply a program that is denied to me for now. So, for the foreseeable future, I cannot in fact M.A.K.E.A.N.E.L.F.

Since the whole point of this project was to get some practice in doing the process myself, I've decided that I don't actually want someone doing it for me. With that the case, I'm going to have to declare this project "Indefinitely Suspended" (read: Dead).

Paint.net isn't an option then?

Not terribly familiar with it. Besides, I had thought this would be a good chance for me to improve my PS skills...which means actually using PS.

What OS are you using? Could it be an issue with UAC?

GIMP is good as well. Though not with all the functions as photoshop, it's more similar than paint.net.

I'm using Windows XP. I'm not sure what the problem is, but whenever I install Photoshop, it becomes badly and irreparably fragmented. The software starts developing loads of problems, and I end up having to uninstall it.

First off, this sounds more like a hardware issue, or an installer issue, than a pure software issue. You might try downloading your version of PS directly from adobe (from their FTP server) and try it again. They have archives of every installer going back quite a ways. I currently have CS2 running on XP SP3, and it runs flawlessly.

As for the race, it definitely helps to start with the original PSD files if you are using Better Bodies (and I hope you are). In fact, if you like, I have a *HUGE* high-res PSD file for both males and females. My race of half-elves (that I'm still debugging) are based on these files - and sound very similar to what you are doing (well, close - they are definitely not albino)

Sadly, hearing a similar race is being made is more disheartening than encouraging. :lmao:
However, I think that those PSDs sound like what I was hoping to find to begin with. Though I still need to find good meshes to use. I kind of hate to pirate heads, and I don't think I can make them. An obstacle I was putting in the "when I get to it" category.

Pirate the heads. I know Emma has very liberal usage policies on her advlt heads, and they are very good. The models themselves are from Better Heads I believe, and they have been around the block a few times. That said, if you are just looking for a challenge, I'm still trying to find someone who can do a borg-style head. :)

I'll PM you with a link to the PSD file.

Thanks for that. I think a good borg head would absolutely take new meshes though.

There have also been suggestions of doing the Borg implants as a hair piece, which would actually allow for more variety since you could mix and match heads with implants. I'm looking into how difficult it would be to modify/create such a piece.
