I don't run VIsta, but I run XP with multiple accounts. I usually create a new account for each Oblivion or Fallout 3 character to keep the files seperate.

And I am able to play Fallout 3 on XP on accounts that don't have administrator privileges. However, I put all my non-admin account into a Windows Group, and then allow access to all files under the Fallout direction to members of that Group. Exactly how to do might be complex to explain here, but you can probably research using Microsoft Help and the Internet.

So unless there is some major step back in Vista on this, I the answer should be no you don't need admin privileges to play Fallout 3, as long as the account has complete control permissions to all files under the Fallout directory.

Your best bet is to install FO3 anywhere other than C:\Program Files, or C:\Program Files (x86) for 64 bit. That way you avoid the hassle of UAC (user account control).

thanks for the clear and prompt answer.... It means that if the player doesn't have admin rights, the admin should give the player all rights for the Fallout 3 maps and files. This should be done initially after installation or after the first play as admin ?

After installation. Also after any updates or mods.

The way I do it is create a Gaming Group in windows.

Then I right click on the top folder (eg the Fallout 3 folder) go to properties, security tab add the group. And then select the group and then select Full Control (or uncheck and recheck if I've changed files under that folder). That should update the permissions for all files under that folder. Again, I'm using XP, there may be some changes for Vista.
