A Novice's Questions

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:06 am

Hello.

I am still new to the Oblivion modding scene, therefore I have some questions and I would appreciate if anyone experienced could help me:

1. With my little experience it seems that .omod conversion scripts are only needed for mods that have options in them (like OOO's Lite/Full and additional plugins) and/or to automatically fill the name/author/version/etc. fields. Is this correct?

2. If so, to create an .omod through OBMM from an archive or folder, only a folder (let us call it folder "Y") with the .esm and/or .esp files in it, along with the resouces folders (Shaders/Textures/etc.) is needed? By other words, can I create an .omod from an archive/folder that does not have any optional plugins or such (a simple mod) only by arranging the files and folders in that particular way? Moreover, does that folder need to be called "Data"? It does not seem so, as I think I as able to create an .omod from the OOO 1.34b5 Hotfix just by selecting "Add Archive" in OBMM's .omod creating tools.

3. What settings should I use in OBMM's .omod creation tool (data files compression, data files compression level, omod compression level)?

4. In DarNified UI, the map is not coloured as the screenshots in TesNexus show. I overcame this by installing Elven Map Redux (which is prettier than the screenshots from DarNified UI's map in TesNexus IMHO), but I am still curious why it did not change the map colour.

5. What leveling system should be used with OOO? I am currently using Kobus Character Advancement System, but I do not know if the game will be unbalanced with the new OOO mechanics (if I will be weaker or stronger than expected by OOO's standards). In addition, what should I activate in OBMM first, KCAS or DarNified UI? It is just because KCAS has a compatibility option for DarNified UI, and DarNified UI has a compatibility option for KCAS, but I imagine that the file overwriting is still important :unsure2: .

6. My weapons do not get bloody with every hit, only in a few. Is this normal?

Thank you in advance, and my apologies for the lenght of the questions,

1. There are a lot of mods that could use OMOD scripts that do not have them. Just think of it this way, if you do not want to install an archive EXACTLY as is, it could use a script.

2. No, you do not need a "Data" folder, and you could delete all options other than the simple install if you know you will never use the options. The simplest for setup of a mod looks like this at the top level: ESMs, ESPs, documents, any of the default data folder. To make an OMOD out of OOO 1.34b5, the ONLY thing you need to do is "add archive."

3. Do not change settings for OMOD compression and what not. That is unnecessary worrying. Leave the defaults.

4. Could you link the picture to which you are referring? Darn UI has a number of options you might have overlooked as well.

5. Any leveling system can be used with OOO. The thing you need to worry about is skill progress, the RATE at which you level. Use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14304 for that. When you install it, it adds a template INI for OOO. Copy the template and rename it to the same as the default. There is no need to back up the default INI because Progress also give you a copy of that as well. If you want to try a more current alternative to KCAS, try http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14065. It is closest to KCAS of the newest leveling mods. You can use the INI to configure it as much as you want. The default settings for that mod are already good for OOO, FCOM, etc. As long as KCAS and Darn UI have compatibility options for one another, it does not matter which one you install first. Darn UI is newer, so I guess it would be safest to install it after KCAS, in case updates have been made (which I highly doubt.) I think I may have an OBMM script for KCAS...if you do not already have one.

6. That is okay, hardly a problem to worry about, haha

Correct. If you make an omod of a standard mod yourself, you should fill in the mod name and version, and OBMM will then install all files when you activate the omod.

As long as you choose "Add archive", OBMM is able to sort it out. But for some reason, the "Add folder" function is less smart, so to be on the sure side, always add packed archives. But you can always watch the result in the plugins pane before actually creating the omod, so if OBMM gets confused, you'll see it there.

3. What settings should I use in OBMM's .omod creation tool (data files compression, data files compression level, omod compression level)?
Choose No compression, at least on the data part. That will speed up the omod creation/installation quite a bit.

4. In DarNified UI, the map is not coloured as the screenshots in TesNexus show. I overcame this by installing Elven Map Redux (which is prettier than the screenshots from DarNified UI's map in TesNexus IMHO), but I am still curious why it did not change the map colour.
No idea, except that I did indeed get my colored map from installing Darn.

5. What leveling system should be used with OOO? I am currently using Kobus Character Advancement System, but I do not know if the game will be unbalanced with the new OOO mechanics (if I will be weaker or stronger than expected by OOO's standards). Switch KCAS for Realistic Leveling or nGCD. Both work by the same principle, but are more compatible. If you choose RL, install it after Darn (or answer No to lett Darn overwrite).

6. My weapons do not get bloody with every hit, only in a few. Is this normal?
No idea - I haven't noticed whether my weapons get bloody or not :)

The problematic map was the world map, and I activated the Color Map option in the installation screen. The "more colored" local map works fine, the problem is just with the world map. Anyway, with Elven Map Redux there is no need for DarN's colored map :).

I was not planning to install obse, that is why I was going to use KCAS, but now I gave OBSE's readme some attention and it's installation is just a copy-paste procedure of 3 files (right? :X) so I will give it a try.

So in your opinion, what leveling mod works the best with OOO?

Thank you in advance.

As a former KCAS user, I chose nGCD (linked in my earlier post.) However, I think all of the best of the newer leveling mods are fine: nGCD, Realistic Leveling and Oblivion XP. Use Progress with any of them and you will have a nice balanced leveling system.

To install OBSE:

1) Download the archive to your "Oblivion" folder.
2) Extract the archive. (It puts a folder in your Oblivion folder.)
3) Move everything out of the folder OBSE added into the Oblivion folder.
4) Delete the empty folder.
5) Updating: Follow steps 1-4, and choose "yes" when prompted to overwrite.

Edit: Always grab the latest of version of OBSE. It is usually a beta, but the betas are usually very stable. If there are serious problems with an OBSE release, you will see it in the forums pretty quickly. Serious issues with the releases are rare.

So even the "obse_steam_loader.dll" and "src" folder go into the Oblivion folder? It is just that the installer only states that "obse_1_2_416.dll", "obse_editor_1_2.dll", and "obse_loader.exe" should be copied.

I need Quiet Feet due to my onboard sound. Do you also recommend OSR or Streamline? They seem troublesome to configure.

Thank you in advance.

It is fine to move all of the files in their into your Oblivion folder. I ALWAYS do a select all and move. Also, you do not need to configure OSR unless you want to raise the FPS limit, usually. (The default range is 10-30. Find the cap set to 30 in the OSR INI if you want to raise it.) As for Streamline, I have instructions for configuring the sl.ini on my site. I recommend using all of these mods.

Personally, I only copy those three files. The others only add unecessary clutter to your Oblivion folder, though do no harm there either.

I recommend OSR - try it with default settings, i.e. just copy the necessary files and try it out.

As for Streamline, I have disabled all the FPS helper functions, but stll find it a must-have mod for its immersive fog as a companion to RAEVWD.

I am all for reducing clutter, so I will change my instructions to match.

Thanks you two.

I forgot one thing: everytime I exited Oblivion, an error was reported. Is this a bad thing? I know there is a fix for this from Tomlong75210's site (Fast Exit), but is it purely to annoy less or is it really important?

Thank you in advance.

Fast Exit 2 is one of the cleanest plugins/mods you will ever install. The awesome author of a similar mod, Deathless Aphrodite, gave the two thumbs up for it as well. If you do not want to crash on exit, install it. Crashing on exit can result in your Oblivion INI settings not being saved if you changed them. CTD-ing is not a good thing, period.
