That is awesome :D

(It's just wishful thinking but I hope this is evidence of a sequel)

The spell system was definitely interesting. It's what I remember best from it. :P

This is really cool :)

And I bought the game from GOG.com just a few weeks ago too, so I should give it a go!

Crap. I traded that game away a year ago. Guess I need to trade back for it! That game desperately needs bug fixes and some mods. It has a lot of potential, but I don't feel that it was fully realized very well. Maybe there will be a reboot that can really flesh out Arx and the game world setting.

Mighty nice of them to update this game. If anyone still doubts about buying the game: read the manual and see all the effort that has been put into the game.

(and it makes me wonder, as updating such an old game is not all that profitable, is this a prelude of something bigger or just a company showing some love towards one of their earlier games..)

...Yay, steam just applied the update.

Or check out a few play through vids to get an idea of of the design and game mechanics. http://www.youtube.com/user/LythaJuliania#p/c/3150A53E4DBE22C1/0/KHPzzZ_Z7aY

Great game, but the puzzles can be aggravating.

I broke the game a few times, completely unintentionally (I went on a killing spree and wiped out the rebel camp, and finished a few quests in ways that I don't think the developers intended). The puzzle with the goblin king and the pie is the best. :D

Never have I squeeled like a school girl before, but by God when I saw these news at RPGWatch, I couldn't think of a more perfect moment. Finally a reason to practice my C coding :D I hope this means that indeed a sequel could be coming our way, as this game is the only currently up at Arkane's website and they have always been very supportive of the game, even when it had become quite old.

Thank you Arkane and Bethesda for this wonderful gift. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel... or a prequel... or anything set in the Arx world.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to devour the source code... and to think I was planning on sleeping tonight... HA!

Awesome news. As I have Windows 7, I was patiently waiting for a patch to support it.
Now, time to see if the game will still work good on it. Otherwise, I'll have to undust my previous computer and install it on it. :P

Have fun digesting files containing 10,000+ lines of code liberally mixing C++ and C, without even function docstrings, much less inline comments or proper documentation. I've admired the studio for their support and certainly applaud their decision to open-source the game, but that code is not for the faint of heart.

Woot! Hope this means they're doing something similar for Zenimax. Knock on wood! ^_^
Also, if the community can do anything at the scale people did for Freespace 2... We're in for a huge treat. :hehe:

Mmm, yes, its definitely not well documented and indeed it is being a [censored] to decipher some of the things. This a really weird approach, I am guessing when they were coding the game everyone knew what they were doing. Well, kinda, there have been 8 patches for the game. Usually when I code anything I tend to write novels. Oh well, still its pretty interesting and I will most definitely learn some new things. Sad thing is I'm gonna have to rely on google and books on that, but oh well uncommented code is better than no code :)

I was wondering, hypothetically as I have no experience with DirectX and its libraries, but would it be possible to recode the game engine to use the newer dx libraries to improve the graphics? I know they can't release the any tools for editing the 3D models, but maybe adding newer dx functions would improve the overall look of the game. Also someone should definitely try at least creating a texture replacer for the game, though the textures are in bmp format which to this day I still can't comprehend as to why someone would do that. I would really like to see an Arx modding community. Its one of the things that this game could've greatly benefited from.

Yup. A plus to this game is that you can kill everything and still complete the MQ.
