Grimdark shaders?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 4:36 pm

Hey guys, I'm trying to make my Morrowind look a little bit more grimdark, and I was wondering if there were any shaders in particular that would make it feel a bit more... spooky? dark (obviously). A great example would be a game like Demon Souls. Any other suggestions to make it feel dark would be fantastic (not just shader related, of course). Thank you.

Some of the simplest ways are to boost contrast (with a contrast shader or misused HDR), make things more brown/"realistic" or add a little bit of motion blur. All together, you can get it pretty good. I've not played Demon Souls myself, though I've seen the trailers (from them, I'd suggest using 10-15 bloom shaders). If you have a particular effect in mind, especially if you can show some screenshots, paintings, concepts, or whatnot, I can try to put something together.

For non-shader stuff, there is a darker MW texture pack. Visual Pack (Complete or XT) tend to be dark a lot of the time and pretty high quality, I've used them almost since release.

Yes. I'm using the darker MW pack right now (along with the darker weathers). As for a particular effect... nothing comes to mind, I just want it to be darker. Here is a SS from DS if you'd like: http://www.play3.de/wp-content/gallery/demons-soul/fm2bk4.jpg I'll try toying around with a bloom shader like you suggested.

I was being sarcastic with the bloom, just playing on the fact that at least some of the trailers have a lot of bloom and very many shiny things.

As for that shot, at first glance it looks like the usual. Bloom, brown and contrast.

You can use the color mood shader I converted from Crysis to make the scene more brown, there are plenty of bloom shaders around, and I think there's a contrast-booster on the MGE shader library wiki. If none of those work, I can look into putting something else together.

Play with ambient colors and fog values. You can get things really darker like that. Although, I am not sure how to edit interior variables, I only edit exteriors with morrowind.ini.

TLM does it though. I like things darker and this is the mod for it. I recommend.
