Time between news and release compared to other Beth games.

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:52 pm

I want to know how far in advance we knew about prior games compared to Skyrim. I saw a post of OB 2005 E3 videos and Oblivion was released in March of 2006, so there were extensive game play videos 9 months from release. Here we are 10 months from release with some screens and basics. Did FNV hold back the marketing of Skyrim till now? Or was this because Beth realized that OB was shown too early, as you can see from the final game were voices are different, speech mini game altered a bit, the subtitle text has been reformatted, etc. How far ahead were Fallout 3 and MW? Discuss.

March 2000: Morrowind is announced
May 2002: Morrowind is released

September 2004: Oblivion is announced
March 2006: Oblivion is released

July 2004: Fallout 3 is announced
June 2007: First glimpse of the game is shown
October 2008: Fallout 3 is released

The time between Skyrim's announcement and release, if there are no delays, is the shortest out of all of those by a few months. The time between the two is so short, and the development time (in combination with pre-production) so long, that I doubt anything major will be changed enough to make the final game look much different than the screenshots and videos we get before it's released.

Both Morrowind and Oblivion were postponed after official release dates had been announced to the public. Morrowind was originally scheduled to be released in November, 2001, and was actually released in May, 2002. Oblivion was scheduled to be released in November, 2005, and was actually released in March, 2006. Skyrim is scheduled to be released in November 2011...

I believe we can detect a pattern.

I don't have any problems with the shortness of time between announcement and release. In fact more devs should take a leaf out of Bethesda's book in this regard, and cut down on all the hype that starts years before release. However I do have an issue over the way Beth are handling the PR over its own game.

Obviously they got a not insubstantial amount of money from Games Informer for exclusivity rights in relation to first-preview, but it seems GI is handling all of the pre-release hype, and not imho doing an awfully good job of it.

For example, I recently found out that the Dwemer Centurion Spheres are to set make a return to the ES series. This for me is a major piece of news. But I discovered this in the recent (admittedly, pretty decent) vid about sound effects. I can't help thinking that if Beth was handling its own PR, it'd do a proper expose about the return of the Centurions and we'd get a richer insight into the world of Skyrim.

This is not meant as a moan, but the policy of keeping to a 'trickle of information' with regards to such a AAA release seems strange, and at times, just plain amateurish.

Yes but when was the first info shown? Skyrims first real game information was reveled Jan 8 for example.

Game Informer also did the OB first preview(with the cover showing a guy on horseback with gasp his sword drawn!).

I also much prefer the announcement of a game or anything(tv show, etc) and release be as close as possible. I don't like to know too much about a game I am going to get before hand and the longer the time between previews and game the more chance I will stumble on it. For example I skip by any talk of Skyrims story and I did not look at that map of Skyrim in the video. Nor will I watch any extensive gameplay videos like the E3 videos of OB. I have not played FNV yet(but will!) and the only thing I really checked out was the early dozen or so screens released during the first preview and the info that went with it. I don't know the story, I have not see video nor have I see pics of New Vegas itself(except in ads which I quickly look away, etc). Even reviews I only skim. For games I am not sure about, I will get as much info as I can before playing.

I don't see any issue with the way Beth is teasing out the info on Skyrim.

Maybe not, its actually possible that Bethesda was working on Skyrim since 2005. Maybe they decided to announce it so late so that they dont delay it. I do remember seeing Elder Scrolls V listed for a 2010 release, so I think that they delayed it to Nov 2011. I don't really expect it to be delayed any further, if there is a delay it will mostly be to Bethesda not wanting to compete with Call of Duty(crappy game series made by unknown devs). Rockstar did the same thing back in 2007 when Halo 3 was coming out. Anyway I hope they do not delay it, its going to sell millions now matter what the competition is and if you were a real TES fan you would postpone purchasing any other games that come out during that month(looking at you COD players).

lol

Considering that 11.11.11 is a Friday...I think a delay is inevitable.

July 2004: Fallout 3 is announced

Err, no. Bethesda announced that they bought the rights to the franchise in 2007.

Has the next CoD already been anounnced, or why is everyone so sure about the fact that CoD will be released around the time of Skyrim, or even the exact date (Activision shall screw there asses to hell, when they try to "steal" this epic release date what Bethesda has reserved for Skyrim! :flame: )

At least I see already hgetting a real hype around Skyrim, I think it would be the best for any other Games releases to be far away of the release of Skyrim.

No, but does it need to be? More parts of those assembly line game series' are just inevitable.

I actually got thinking about this the other day. I thought 'this is an awfully hardcoe promotional blitz considering the game is still almost a year away' and then I thought about how long FO3's promotional period was, and how long Oblivion's was and so forth. So really, compared to past releases this is actually a pretty short span of time to build hype and promote the game.

Fallout 3 was announced in 2004. I remember because that was when I registered on these forums. At the time it was Interplay that still owned the license, and Bethesda was given the rights to make Fallout 3, 4, and 5. It wasn't until later that Bethesda bought the whole IP after Interplay started (well, they had already been headed that way) going bankrupt. It's true that they didn't start working on it fully until after Shivering Isles. If you look at how Fallout 3 turned out, it's amazing that they developed it in such a relatively short period of time.

To keep it on topic, they did meet the Fallout 3 release date, so I think they're getting better at that. And Oblivion's delay had a lot to do with the X360. And I agree that Game Informer is incompetent and doing a horrible job of handling the pre-release hype so far, but that's par for the course on their part.

Incidentally, Diablo III is supposed to come out this year. If it happens to get released in November it will be a tough choice between those two. I'll probly end up getting both either way.

I think he meant that Skyrim had a 2010 release date but they postponed it before it was announced because they didn't want to compete with the CoD game that came out in 2010.

Have they announced it yet? I've gotten so sick of no news about it I just quit paying attention, not to mention Skyrim is worth far more obsession in my opinion.

More on topic, I don't think they will delay Skyrim. Because they have given themselves enough time before announce. It could have been delayed 4 times and we would have never known.
I think the late announce quick release is a good idea. More hype in 1 period of time, less disapointing the fans.

They announced a while back that the release date was set for 2011. There's been a lot of news about it actually but nothing more on the release date. You should check out the official site.
