Fallout 1&2 graphics issues

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 9:41 pm

So after completing fallout new vegas three times, I had the urge to dust off my fallout 1 and 2 CDs and give them another go. I had not played fallout 1 for over a decade and it brought back a massive amount of nostalgia. After rushing through fallout 1 with less then 12 hours of playtime I completed it and am ready to start on fallout 2.

I honestly didn't want to rush through it but I had no choice because I have massive graphical issues while running the game. To the point where the starting videos have offset colors such as bright orange/baby blue boxes all over the screen. Barely able to distignuish the video in the backround. And to the point where in game the whole screen goes black and the black goes away when my mouse moves around on the screen. Basically once every 30 seconds my entire screen or half my screen is covered in black and I have to "paint" over it by scrolling my mouse all over the place to "clear" the black.

From what I remember from fallout 2, it is a richer game with at least 10 times the content. Instead of rushing through it with less then 12 hours, I want to invest 100+ hours into it like my younger days.

Now I don't know what else to do to fix this. I have tried reinstalling the games, uninstalling video drivers and downloading most to date etc. Only thing that I can come up with is that I am on a windows 7 computer and the game was never designed for this. Big sadface for me right now, so if one of you could help me I would really appreciate it.

I had the exact same problem and this suggestion fixed it

its because of win7
Edit the following file in Notepad. Be careful not to save it as ddraw.ini.txt... notepad may try to add the .txt extension for you !!! select All Files from the dropdown list when saving to avoid this.

DDRAW.INI

Look for the section in the file as follows:

;XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
[Graphics]
;Set to 0 for 8 bit fullscreen
;Set to 4 for dx9 fullscreen
;Set to 5 for dx9 windowed
;dx9 modes cause some corruption of movies
;A dx9 mode is required for any graphics related script extender functions to work (i.e. fullscreen shaders)
;Modes 1, 2 and 3 are no longer supported
Mode=0

Now, change "Mode=" to "Mode-4".

Save the file and start the game normally.

hope it works for ya

I found a much easier and safer alternative. I typed fallout 2 windows 7 in the google search bar, and the first link gave me a solution which was verified by multiple people. http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/8870-fallout-2-a.html

All you have to do is create a simple batch file to stop explorer.

open up a new notepad. copy paste exactly this into it:

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
fallout2.exe
pause
start explorer.exe

then save as "all files" not just text only. name it as fallout2.bat

drag this new .bat file you created into the game directory... in this case fallout 2. then right click on it and create a shortcut and place the shortcut on desktop.

this works for older games that have issues with windows 7. For example starcraft 1 broodwar and fallout 1&2. Just replace "fallout2.exe" in the batch file to what ever exe you want to run.

What if you're using Steam...? I have the same problems as the OP that I posted in a different thread yesterday. I killed explorer.exe while running it but I still get the black screen. Any suggestions?

The problem with explorer is... It has a bad habit of ressurecting itself when you think it's dead. I had the same exact problem with fallout tactics which I purchased from steam and this fixed that no problem.

Make sure to create the batch file as I listed and place the batch file in the exact game directory where the exe is. Then make a shortcut for the bat file and put the shortcut on the desktop. Close all applications and double click on the bat file.
