A basic question about posting on this forum . . .

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 7:23 pm

Well, here it is: I'm a creative writing student in Chicago and this year I participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). Well, I finished my novel which, wouldn't you know, is an Elder Scrolls IV novel. My boyfriend thought it was great, but then, yeah, he's my boyfriend. I started cleaning it up and thought how silly it was to just have it sit on my hard-drive.

Then I remembered this forum.

Would anyone be terribly offended if I posted it here? It is over 50,000 words long (those are the NaNoWriMo requirements, but I wouldn't post it all once, I'd post a chapter a week or so or something like that). It is topic appropriate (Elder Scrolls IV), but it does follow the game (I read the rule about "getting out of the game") in the sense that it roughly follows some of the events in the game, with characters from the game, and so on. However, I've exercised creative license to make things more realistic. Example: The Imperial City is obviously much, much larger than in-game and a much larger population.

I wasn't sure if I needed permission to post on this forum or if I needed to submit and idea and get permission. or how this works exactly. Just trying to be polite and respect the forum. :)

Thanks. GGD

Sure, a chapter a week would be fine. Make sure the paragraph formatting doesn't get screwed up by the forum, sometimes it makes things into a big block of text. Ask a mod to close this thread when you make the new one with proper titles. :)

For what is worth, I say "Welcome. I look forward to reading your work."

As you will see, there are a number of fairly long fanfictions active right now- I don't know how many words Rumpleteasza has posted, but her novel is over 100,000 words, I believe.

As to "not following the game," I would characterize that as more a suggestion for keeping things fresh and interesting. An excellent example of how to follow the main quest and still be fresh is Rachel the Breton's "Edward the Imperial."

Anyway, welcome to the forum, and happy writing.

Welcome to fanfic. Nice to see you coming over from the OB forums!

Take a peek at some of the fanfics for formatting tips. Breaking things up is good. Posting frequency depends, in my opinion to some extent on how long you are comfortable making your installments. At 500- 1500 words each, twice a week works pretty well. If you decide you are more comfortable with longer posts, then consider reducing the frequency. Again, just my opinion, but stories that get long (much over 2k words) can be a bit intimidating. Good luck!

Edit: Oh, don't worry about total length of your story. Several of us are working stories of 100k or so.

Sounds like a great idea, just keep in one thread and post you chapters as you have the time. We look forward to it. :)

How many words was your story the last time I counted, Peleus? I distinctly recall doing it twice, and the entire procedure took me over half an hour each time. That's why I always keep my stories in word documents, though I can never stick with one long enough to have any kind of word count assimilate. Hopefully this story will keep my interest long enough to reach the tens of thousands :D

Oh, how rude of me! Welcome to our humble forum, my good lady. Please, make yourself at home, post whatever story you'd like. I would give you a fishy stick, but you've already been here a while and the practice has become rather controversial I shall instead give you the "Welcome to the Fan Fiction Forum Ice Cream Cone :icecream:" Enjoy!

EDIT: Ah, I now see that Louis and co. have reached 12,000 words already. Well then, next marker is 50,000!

Including the current part in progress, the total tally of New kind of Warfare brings it to 117,131 words. I have at least four more chapters to tell; I think you will get your wish, Darkom. ;)

Do I want to know how you know that?

I'm a big fan of NaNoWriMo (I've done it for 3 years now) so I definitely encourage you to show us what you've come up with. Just make sure to do a little editing and cleanup before you post. I know first-hand how messy rushed prose can get. :goodjob:

:o We need more people like this around!

By all means, post away! I think a chapter a week sounds perfect, and is probably what most people aim for. As you can see, there are plenty of writers here with novel-length fics, so you're in company! Looking forward to seeing your take on Oblivion :)

First, thanks to everyone for the warm welcome and encouragement. I'll post later today or tomorrow, although it's Thanksgiving weekend in the USA, which means lots of folks around the house.

One thing that's slowing me down is I'm torn between two different narrations styles: the traditional omnipotent third person POV or a first person POV that shifts from character to character as the story is revealed through their eyes (think Faulkner's As I Lay Dying). I'm probably going to do the latter, since I think it forces the author to not reveal the story too early, but it will mean rewriting and rewriting and rewriting and, then, rewriting again.

As for formatting, I thought I'd just use standard publication formatting and style (space between paragraphs, dialog in quotes, no annoying POV shifts, yada, yada, yada). From the text box I'm typing in now, I can see an italics button, an underline button, a font selection, and so on - so I should have the basic text tools I need.

And yes, I'll be editing quite a bit, not only to clean the story but for continuity and clean up some rather obvious lore errors.

One idea I'm toying with is including images. Not a lot, rather like the illustrations that used to appear in novels. (I have a beautiful edition of dikeens, A Tale of Two Cities, complete with illustrations). Obviously, I can't inbed them directly into the post (I know, I've tried :( ). Anyway, I'd have to go back and take the pictures, so that might not happen. Maybe it's better to focus on the story first time around.

@ Arcadian: Thanks! :) Did you know I read your stuff? I think I told you that once before . . . very nice. You sort of inspired me. (Just so everyone knows who to blame when it all goes bad. :) ).

@ Darkom: Thanks, we love ice cream! Yes, I've been around a bit, haunting the general forum, making a nuisance of myself on the mod forum, generally making everyone roll their eyes. Oh well, everyone needs a hobby!

To everyone else, thanks again.
