Why did you write this line?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 9:06 pm

"I'm looking for my father. Middle-aged guy. Maybe you've seen him?"

When I saw this, I turned off the game, and never played it again. My character had 9 intelligence, so how could I justify choosing that line (which was obviously what was needed to advance the main quest in the first town in the game)?

Give your character a break. It's the first time in his life he's walked into a bar and asked for information on someone. Not like he's a trained PI or something.

Maybe it should've been a low intelligence response. :P

Short and simple answer, Bethesda can't even write a children's story.

So? It seems to be working both ways judging by your posts too. :whisper:

Video games, in general, are not known for having incredible dialogue in general...but anyone who thinks that line is really bad has never played, oh, Final Fantasy 7...or 8...or 10.

I agree with a previous poster, the line reflects the Wanderer's ignorance about the Capital Wasteland and how to look for someone. Considering the frequent references to the Wanderer's "strong resemblance" to his/her father. It may have been phrased differently but I didn't think so hard about it until I read this thread, hahaha.

he only passed by a few hours ago, at most.

This makes sense assuming the player doesn't wander around for a few days or maybe a week before walking into the bar. When I make a new character I usually just wander around for awhile before I start on the mainquest. So it could be a few weeks before I even start looking.

Normal Line. Give Lone Wanderer a break it was his first moments on the outside and he had a hard day.

Luckily for me, things like this bothers me very little in a game. I consider all the Fallout games up at the top of my favourite games along with anything made by Blizzard and Arcanum (and probably ff7 for psx). I would never ignore a perfectly great game because of a silly line. Actually, I'm pretty sure there's plenty of silly lines or atleast lines that could've been better, in most games if you look close enough :)

Recently played some resident evil 4 with my sister and I must say that both story and everything we fight is right-out ridicilous and unrealistic and yet, we still enjoy the game :)

Stopped playing the game... because of one line of dialog. Interesting.

This makes me question myself: have I ever bought a game just for the dialog? And I can answer that question without a moment's hesitation: nope. Have I ever stopped playing a game because of the dialog? Nope. Have I ever been disappointed by dialog in a video game? Sure.

But

I'm happy that I haven't seen Engrish localization in years. "All your base are belong to us!"
