Dragon Shouts and Silence

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 8:45 pm

Dragon shouts, thats a voice. That means it should susceptible to the silence spell effect.
What I mean is should casting silence should stop the dragon or dragonborn from using dragon shouts?

And to collect opinions we have a poll.

Ideas?

It seems logical, but it could also be an exploit.
I think it should, dragons should have other defeinses too...

When the pc uses a dragon shout does the pc actually breathe fire/wind/ice/slow down time or does the dragon shout call a dragon into battle and the dragon does the damage? Can you even use a dragon shout without a dragon present?

I thought dragonshouts were thu'um, just another form of magic. I also though silence stopped spellcasting because it prevented spellcasters from reciting the incantations. Why would the dragonshouts be any different?

From my understanding, yes you can cast them without dragons. Essentially your just saying words that have a power of their own.

And yes it is Thu'um, but I'd rather not use lore terms and half of the people ask what it is.
At least as far as I know.

Yes. It's called silence for a reason... silence = no sound.

Yes, silence should do the same effect in magic as oblivion, even dragon shouts...

So the pc is going to breathe fire?

Dragon Shouts sound like they would be a Greater Power spell and some of those kinds of spells in Oblivion were immune to silence. An interesting side effect of silence could be to literally mute the creature/ NPC for the duration of the spell so they can't call for help, backup, or report a crime as it's happening.

Yes. Silence should definitely "silence" the dragonborn and dragons. Thus preventing them from speaking or "shouting"

Also, not all dragon shouts are actual "shouts" some are whispers -still called shouts- and are used for stealth. The example they give in the GI article is the one that basically does a blink effect. You kind of teleport x amount of feet in a certain direction.
I just find that funny :P

Makes sense to me. But a silenced dragon can still eat you.

We have no idea how Dragon Shouts even work and you're speculating on the effects a specific spell with have on people trying to cast it?

Only if spell or enchant will be powerful enough or poison will be more potent.
Check of Illusion skill and power of spell VS Willpower and Intelligent of target.
Since Dragons is magnificent mystical beasts they have outstanding stats it will be hard for player silence them.

Yep, makes sense. Could be a nice way for chars who aren't overbeefed warriors to get an edge in fights, too.

Well, dragons still do have claws and teeth, and the whole fire-breath thing, unless silence can take that away too, which wouldn't make much sense.

But it would seem logical if dragon shouts would be effected by silence, yes.

They don't breathe fire, they speak it...

"HA!!! Stupid dragon, now what are you gonna do huh?" five minutes later from the inside of the dragons stomach.. "Well, that was stupid."

I have a feeling that Thu'um/Dragonshout is something that transcends mere magic.

Kinda like gaining root-level access to the fabric of existence.

Well, by nulling sound.

However, I have a distinct feeling that Thu'um/Dragonshout is more than just a fancy tongue, and is more along the lines of "tongue of the divine", and has a sort of "override puny mortals' magic" effect; hence my comparison with "root level access to reality".
