Home away from home!

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 8:11 pm

Hello everybody

This topic is for the discussion of various homes or hideouts apart from Megaton and Tenpenny Tower for those who wish to live out in the wastes. So have you found any interesting settlements ripe for living? If so please tell the story of how you cleared out and furnished your new home.

I personally have yet to find another settlement as I have read online that any equipment stored in a container not within an 'owned' home disappears after a set amount of time. Could anyone clear this up for me? (Xbox 360 version)

I have a two small places which I visit on a regular basis. They are good for dropping off gear, getting health, etc. I keep both places fully stocked with health items, weapons and armor and ammo. (I'm playing with self-imposed rules, one of them being a little like Far Cry 2, with safe houses.) However I live full time in Megaton. These are just places in the wastes that I can stop in to and heal up, shoot some Jet, do some drinking... you know, like a clubhouse. The Mechanist's Forge and Gallo's Place in the County Mainline Sewer. The Forge has a workbench, bed and safe storage. Plus a really cool entry door. The sewer has a workbench around the corner, safe storage, a bed and a tv, and a little Nuka collectible collection.

As for safe storage, I use these things: Ammo boxes, medical kits, nuka cola machines. These items are safe for me, in any location, in the entire game, at any time. Umm, except one prominent place in Point Lookout. Be warned. Contrary to what others have said on these forums, I find that crates and mailboxes and other storage, WILL respawn on me every three days. I test containers by taking all contents, placing a single bullet in the container I'm testing, and leaving the area (game cell) for over 73 hours. If the bullet is there, cool. If the bullet and a coffee cup is there, not cool. If nothing's there... then yeah.

These days I mostly use Tenpenny Tower as my home, but once I used Super-Duper Mart. I killed all the Raiders and stuffed their bodies in one of the restrooms, then I cleaned the place up as bas as you can in a vanilla game. I started gathering a lot of junk to store on the shelves and make it look like the place was untouched since the war. I added food shelves with boxes of pre-war food, filled the freezers with nuka cola and alchohol, then I made a section with pre-war clothes, kitchen utinsels, hardware tools, electronics, toys, and sporting goods. I also filled the pharmacy with medicine, and at the check-out registers I placed tobaccoo, bubblegum, bobby pins, and some skill books (the ones that look like magazines).

It wasa really awesome, but sadly having all that stuff caused my game to lag. :(

Wow these are all really interesting, thanks for the advice on containers I'll be sure to test them first! :)

Raven Rock seems pretty cool too I'm assuming your PC and used the console? If I had a computer that could handle it I'd rush out and buy the PC version straight away.

I've found that the metro station with Roy Phillips and his ghouls has a bed and some open containers for use so maybe that could be an option? I've yet to check Dukov's place for the necessities.

Thanks for the suggestions guys keep em coming!

Playing FWE as a ghoul has me using Underworld as my home until I can gain enough levels and amass enough ammo to attempt a journey to Megaton.

I used to console to make one of the beds mine along with the desk in Doctor Barrows office which I store my gear in

You're a lucky man. :)

I like to use the Sniper Shack. It's around the area where Rockbreaker's Last Gas is located.

There's good storage, a work bench, a bed, some books, the Victory Rille, and a spectacular view, which serves as a great sniping spot. Just a shame there's no radio inside.

Be careful, though, as the surrounding area is littered with potential enemies. I suggest you leave a few mines lying around.

I usually visit the shack as more of a 'vacation' with the dog and my right-hand man, Jericho (Jericho and the dog sleep on the floor together :P). It's pretty nice, and allows me to get away from the troubles of the world, which I'm usually busy solving. Hmm, killing the weak does get boring after a while.

Another nice place to camp is the gypsy village, once you get rid of all the ghoul scum, that is. Plenty of houses, so my squad usually joins me.

I use Megaton as a storage area, but I usually sleep wherever I am at the moment.. Whether it be under a bridge or in a rusty ol' trailer.. I drift alot.

I got a lot of use out of Smith Casey's garage. Good place to categorize loot, plus occasional target practice.
You just have to pretend to not see the big ol' hatch leading down unless you want to speed up the MQ.
