Peer-to-Peer

Does anyone have insight on how console multiplayer performance will be handled and how Brink will mitigate the inherent weaknesses of Peer-to-Peer hosting?

Peer-to-peer hosting, afaik.

There are no dedicated servers for console at least.

Was looking more for any details that might indicate that Brink developers are concerned with how peer-to-peer hosting will affect the mp experience, and how they have addressed issues around peer-to-peer.

mp beta might help.

There is/was a closed PS3 mp beta under strict NDA.

A dedicated server is a piece of hardware which soley cares about administrating the game, without anyone playing on that machine.

Peer-to-peer means that one player's client will also act as a server and has to administrate the whole game.

P2P will be good enough, but some P2P games' multiplayer range from utter [censored] connection(Call of Juarez, RDR) to very good(Uncharted 2, it never lagged, had host migration, only problem was getting into a game).

this is the only thing that really worries me about Brink. the fact that it is P2P. That and only 8 vs 8. I'd prefer at least 16 vs 16 32 player match. but whatever.

anyway.. yeah. I just hope they make it so it doesn't lag a lot.

P2P can be painful for some... I've been playing CoD4 to transition into the fast-paced P2P: 2 bars is about average for me, 1 and 3 bars occur evenly. The day I see 4 bars I will cry tears of joy.

And I am seeing some WEIRD stuff over kill cams, 90% of the time. I'll be running along, a guy emerges up some stairs, I snap to him instantly (not literally with auto-aim, lol) and let rip, but he kills me first. I see his kill cam, and apparently he runs up the stairs, I wander through obliviously, he starts firing... and by the time I'm nearly dead on his screen, THEN I start firing.

Though I just prevent myself from giving a damn about KDR, laugh at the lag, and it's actually pretty fun. I must say, after these couple days of CoD4 I'm a little more open to trying MP considering stats don't matter, and if you go in without a care for stats it'll still be enjoyable.

P2P improved a lot when the Call of Duty series introduced host migration, though.

Which is better? Dedicated?

Dedicated servers of course. It means there is some hardware exclusively working on administration. Also good servers have an insane brandwith-capability; they allow a much better connection than private internet connections.

It's easier to make consoles P2P.

Server-browsers are a typical PC element. Just like general menu-navigation works better on the PC. Also the servers would probably require compatible software, which might cause problems especially with the PS3.

Some console-games have dedicated servers, though. But it requires a dedicated console then.

Thats something ive never seen come up in a console war. lol. I'd rather have a fun non lag multiplayer than a laggy multiplayer with better graphics. L4D has dedicated servers and its still pretty laggy though.
