About a month ago, I bought Fallout 3: GotY off Steam. It worked great, aside from the occasional lock up from playing 5+ hours at a time.

But a week ago, I started it up, and played for about 15 minutes and it crashed. No error message or anything. Straight to desktop. I searched and searched for a similar problem, but no one has the same problem I do.

The game worked fine. Until about a week ago. I tried reinstalling Fallout 3, verified the integrity of the files, defragmented the files, started a new game, deleted old save files, tried the patch. Nothing. I don't have "ffdshow" so I know that isn't a problem.

I haven't done anything to my computer, except about two weeks ago, my brother's friend and I cracked open my computer because I plan on modding it further. We took out the RAM because that's one of the things I want to upgrade. So we popped them out, checked them out, and put them back in. The first time I tried booting, I got an error message that some memory wasn't functioning right. So I took the RAM back out, and put it back in, making sure everything was nicely put in the socket. Booted up, and it was fine.

I'm no idiot when it comes to computers, either. The RAM was put back the same way it was before. Nothing else was tampered with.

If it matters, my hardware mainly consists of:
Windows XP SP3
2.8 GHz Pentium 4
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS (drivers fully updated)
1.25GB RAM

What I can't figure out is why it just recently started happening. Everything worked fine before, and now it's randomly crashing. Any ideas?

I can see only two things "wrong", and neither is the sort to "suddenly" make any difference. Each should already have been creating problems for you all along.

For WindowsXP, you just can't put as much stuff into the background as you have now. You are loading 700 MBs that way every time Windows starts. You should pare that down to no more than 325 MBs or so.

Second, that old model video card of yours (released in 2007) is really a very weak link, it should've meant your playing enjoyment has been greatly impaired already because of weaknesses such as very narrorw memory system bandwidth, only 20% of what the practical minimum card has, and a Texture Fill Rate that is only 58% as good as the minimum:

Sorry that I just didn't see or know of anything to match to the symptoms that you described, though.

There are some programs I have that start up when I start Windows that I close and just haven't gotten around to fixing the preferences.

My video card is hardly over a year old, it's not a PCI-E, either, just a PCI.

nVIDIA produced their Geforce 8n00 generation four years ago. None of those chips have been produced since then. You bought "NOS" - New, Old Stock, which should have had a greatly reduced price due to its age. PCIe has been available for six years, and was already dominant within six months of release, so if you do not have PCIe, your motherboard is extremely, ridiculously old for a PC, as well, and could easily be suffering from any number of afflictions that electronics that old is subject to, but most especially bad capacitors, which can start leaking overnight very suddenly just because their time ran out.

Incidentally, PCI, when used for video, was obsolete 15 years or so ago, when AGP-1, the first standardized video bus, was released. The only motherboards newer than that without either AGP or PCIe were built on order for Dell, HP, and Sony in the early 2000s, in order to make the cheapest possible desktop computers, which were intended to have no better video than the onboard Intel Chipset video chips. Those PCs were very bad quality, designed from the start to be recycled after very short semi-useful lives.

Since answering the last (above) time, I looked up my old personal archives and found a copy from when I was contributing at GameSpot's NWN2 forum, late in 2006. Plain PCI had already become relatively rarely seen, already, by then. This is what I found, and it's as pertinent now as it was then. The "fastest" video card that isn't bottlenecked by plain PCI is the seven or eight year old Radeon 9200, or its Geforce semi-equivalent, the 6200. (I say 'semi" because both were bog-slow compared to everything else in their own respective Graphics generation, and there just weren't others readily at hand to compare).

Graphics without any Video Bus?

Although the complaints seemed to stop coming up quite so often, so that the second iteration of this reference thread had been allowed to just age quietly, several recent recurrences of new members asking about these non-upgradeable (for gaming) add-in edge connector slots have appeared. It is getting to be time that the current Graphics Rankings thread must be locked -- and the new one gets a copy of this, so the old must be all new again.

Plain PCI is a shared bus, running at the slow speed of 33 MHz. AGP 3 runs at 66 MHz and accellerates to 8X. PCI-e accellerates 16X. The PCI bus is just totally too slow. Despite the recently released ATI X1300 in PCI, that card's own, already bog-slow, performance is cut down by more than half when matched to this slow, general purpose bus. You're looking at an expensive part (very low demand for it) and terrible return on the investment.

My PC is a Dell Dimension 3000 from 2004, so yes, a relatively cheap computer. I think we got the tower with a pretty nice LCD monitor that my brother still uses, keyboard and mouse for around $800 I recently found out that my RAM is being under-clocked by 67MHz. Both sticks I have are rated for 400MHz, and this was set by the factory. I know I definitely could use an upgrade.

I'm not completely tech savvy, I don't have much of an idea of what you're talking about. I know what you're talking about when you say integrated graphics card, and what you've posted about the PCI bus is incredibly interesting. Thank you for the input.

I've been planning a total re-build on my computer for awhile. I don't have any issues whatsoever, my computer has been and stays relatively fast and clean. It works, it doesn't crash or anything. My only problem has been Fallout 3: GotY.

About the re-build, I was considering scrapping the parts in my computer and try to bring in some money for them. I know I could probably get >$200 with the parts I have, though outdated.

I'd be surprised if you could get $200 with what you have. The 8400GS video card, processor, and RAM will sell but not as much as you'd think...those components are really outdated.

Nonetheless, good thing you're getting away from that Dimension 3000 because it's pretty much not upgradeable.

Where I live, a lot of families have retired perfectly usable desktop PCs way too soon, because the laptops have more cachet as status symbols, and they don't pay any attention to game play capability until it's too late. Thrift shops have complete PCs, better than any Dell "Dimension" cheapie was, for about $100, with keyboard, CRT display, mouse, and speakers. The possibility of parting out a junker like a Dimension and realizing more than $50 or so is a dim one.

The enclosures they came in weren't any good to use for upgrades, the RAM they used has been bypassed twice over since it was current, the 8400 GS for PCI has no real market, and the rest is equally unsellable. It probably has a Celeron CPU, and no one will want that.

OK, that's the negative end. From the other direction, compared to 2004, a decent desktop is within reach at $800 or so, instead of $1100. Those of us who build our own, and / or help others do so, can beat that $800 by a couple of hundred, depending on the uses we want to put a PC to.

My computer has a 2.8GHz P4 Prescott processor. When we called Dell to build it, I'm pretty sure we requested a little more power than a basic desktop for some gaming. The integrated graphics card is 96MB, which from my understanding, is actually kind of high for an integrated graphics card, compared to the 32MB in my brother's new Gateway. Anyway, the P4 Prescott processors sell for around $20 online. I read that they were much more efficient and faster than other P4 models. As for the other parts, I think you're thinking too logically. Anyone like myself would think they're getting a pretty good deal. What you're talking about now is far deeper than what I've ever bothered trying to get into, and even my brother's friend, was talking about this kind of stuff. I'm the kind of person that knows numbers and what's typically faster than something else, but I couldn't explain why or how and I don't know how all the individual parts tie in together with each other.

I was planning a rebuild, and was told that the shell would be fine. I would just need to make sure that the parts would fit it. I can't remember the name of the case, it's something Micro, I think. I haven't the money for a rebuild now, as I have other hobbies than gaming that take up a good chunk of time and money.

I will certainly keep all this information in mind. Although, it's too bad none of this will go toward fixing Fallout 3 for me. :sadvaultboy:

I think I'm going to do a disk clean up and probably a defrag on both of my hard drives. I un-installed the programs that I had running at start up, so maybe this will all fix my problem.

Late to the party, but CheeseCake, good luck to ya! hehehe, man, I had a lvl 80 running all over WoW, and the rig I played on had no business even logging in there. I haven't been back since upgrading, 'cause I'm sure the awesome difference would pull my butt back in to that black-hole of spare time.

I don't know how much is in your collection, but there are a whole lot of less graphics-intensive games out there, and they're really cheap. Don't cheat yourself ^Torment just because FO3 isn't in the "cards" for you, presently.
