Full Scale Battles (Havok)

Post » Mon Mar 21, 2011 8:26 am

While I was listening to the video, giving information about the Havok system, the guy mentioned something about; hundreds and hundreds of characters. Will it now be possible to have full scale battles like we saw in the Lord of the Rings movies? Not that I want to exchange the RPG aspect of the game for action. But additional to the gameplay it would be awesome to have an huge battle, wouldn't it?

LOL! Brought back memories of the EPIC Battle for Bruma, where, with the fate of the world on the line, only a dozen soldiers show up. Sure I understand the lag that would have taken place with full armys, but always had a chuckle over that one.

seing the graphics of mount&blade and warband, and the fact that the second requires a good computer, I doubt a game with great graphics and great batles is posible right now.

I'm still laughing at that.

Mount and Blade doesn't require a good computer. I have a Frankenstein Computer and can have 600 guys on screen with no lag in that game....

The problem is having so many AI calculations on hand with large battles. We will probably see slightly bigger battles in Skyrim just cause they have it more optmized. But 360 only has a 3 core CPU. And dividing Ai threads is fairly difficult. I've seen demos where ATi had hundreds of individual NPC's using GPGPU computing on their 3 year old GPU's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL72EmeZ1Vg That was in DX10 :hubbahubba: . The tech will be there next round of consoles. Its already available on PC but with a multiplaform game I dont see much they could do. :(

Edit: 16,000+ NPC's :P

I believe we'll get some much bigger scale battles with what they're using, but bigger lord of the rings scale battles might still be just out of reach. We're getting there though.

I'm trying to stay skeptic till I see some Skyrim game footage. :whistling:

Its certainly possible even on lower end hardware. Just the method you want to use is what matters. Do you want to drown the CPU in AI work or let the GPU take the load?

Quite possibly. I really hope we get a couple of giant battles between the Seperatists and the Loyalists and maybe the Nords versus the dragons near the end of the main quest line.

Maybe, but I read taleworld forums regularly and it's seem that if you update from version 1.113 you will get a huge stuttering.
