New exterior?

Post » Tue Mar 22, 2011 2:21 am

Hi guys, new here. I'm sure this must have been answered somewhere, but for the life of me, I can't find it.

Is it possible to make new exterior areas? I want to make my home neighborhood in the GECK, but I don't want to modify the existing FO3 world.

Thanks!

Making certain kinds of things is sorta hard in the GECK. that's one of them..

If you're going to try this, I suggest you copy an existing worldspace and start with that. In the GECK you click "World" and then select "World Spaces" and then click something like.. TestQAWorld. and right click it and select "duplicate". Then you select your new worldspace (named with the suffix COPY000) and rename it to something you recognize by clicking twice on it (but not fast) and putting your new name. Unselect the "Use LOD Data" box. Then, you could try working with this worldspace copy as your own.

It's not a beginners sort of edit, if you are just starting modding I wouldn't start here. At least interiors give you a chance to start to understand how doors and navmesh works. Exteriors have extra caviats on top of what interiors offer, and all-new worldspaces add another layer onto that.

Hi, and Welcome!

I was wondering, what type of worldspace do you want to make? And how do you intend on getting to your worldspace?

If you get there by boat, tunnel, spaceship or some other method, then you would need to put your dock, tunnel, transporter or whatever somewhere on the wasteland, which then transports you to your worldspace. You will also need to make a map of your worldspace.

If you can see the outside of your town while running around the wasteland, you will need to build the outside of it in that cell.

If you can't see the outside of your town, like many DC areas which can only be accessed via Metro, you will need to have some form of entrance (i.e Metro) on the wasteland map, which then teleports you to your worldspace. With this you don't need to make your own map, use the wasteland one.

However you intend on making your worldspace, some modification to the existing FO3 world is going to be needed.

I'm still a noob myself, but this is how i understand it.

Good luck B)

cyberman is correct easyest methode would be to create a little neyghbourhood u entervia a metro or sewer acces so u dont have to mettle with the world layout wich can get u into a lot of problems then doing a small island inside the ruins of dc so to speak.

Mastering the creation of a worldspace for many is one of the hardest aspects of the GECK. I just wish to warn you, you are diving into the ocean without a lifejacket on, and there are alot of sharks circling you. But if you have the persistance to do so, and don't give up, you can do this without too many issues. It mainly just takes forever to make things in such a large space.

Some tips when editing the preexisting wasteland to adding the 'door' to your new worldspace. DO NOT delete any items/objects from the worldspace. Either move them underground, and thus out of the way, or double click them and check the 'Initially Disabled' box which makes them disabled when you play, and thus not there. Be very careful not to drastically change the navmesh, only where you need to. Pick and spot that does not involve reshaping the ground, and preferably not in a crowded portion of the wasteland.

Lots of good input, thanks! I plan on putting this in its own space, not connected to the wasteland, so I'll definitely put a portal/boat/teleporter somewhere. I know this is a huge undertaking, but I'm pretty good at learning tool sets. I have a good handle on interiors, so I'm ready for the big stuff now. :)

I tried to duplicate a Wasteland cell, but nothing happened, so I thought it was not possible. It sounds like I was trying to duplicate the wrong thing?

It seems like you're trying to copy an exterior worldspace cell from the cell window? I havn't got access to the G.E.C.K atm. I think you can only duplicate interior cells this way.
Goto the main toolbar; World > World Spaces. You can duplicate one from here.

Hope i understood you right and this makes sense. Not at my PC right now.

You cannot duplicate an individual WorldSpace cell. The only cells you can duplicate are 'Interior Cells' or 'entire Worldspaces'.

I think some of the people who are posting in this thread have not actually read all of the posts in it.

You do not duplicate cells within the Wasteland worldspace and expect to get anywhere with it, you create your own worldspace and edit a cell there. There's an earlier post which describes the easiest way I know of to abscond with your own little, private Worldspace. And, the linking of your new worldspace to the wasteland is the easy part. That's not even worth thinking about until you feel like you can actually work with your new worldspace in the first place.

My released mod has a new worldspace in it (a modified bethesda copy as I described in the earlier post). Having done that, I'll repeat that I believe a brand-new worldspace as a project for a brand-new modder is not for the best. It's not like editing Doom where new world areas can be worked on by newbies and it makes sense. In Fallout 3 it requires a bunch of detailed knowledge, such as how to do exterior navmeshing properly. And you will have hell attempting to do exterior navmeshing if you don't even know how to do interiors (those are easier). PLUS, exterior world editing takes a lot of system memory - - especially if you are viewing the navmesh - and the GECK tends to be crashy when pushed in this way.

IMO switch gears a bit and work on interiors first if you are new.

Thanks for the input, Tarrant. Good stuff. Rest assured I'm ready to at least take a look at exterior spaces and tinker with them, after building several interior maps already. :)
