Trying to lip sync

Post » Sat Mar 26, 2011 2:52 am

I am trying to generate a .lip file so my voices will be lip synced. However, when I try to load up my mod in the old CS, it says my version of Oblivion is too high. What should I do?

Is the lip file saved as its own external file? If so, I suggest just starting an empty mod, generate the lip file, and attach it using the new CS in your mod. Never messed with lip files before so I'm not even sure if it will work but it's worth a shot.

No no no, you're doing it wrong. It doesn't work that way. You need to make the .lip synchs in the old CS, yes, but you can't load your mod when using the Oldie, because as you noticed - it can't load it. Now, this is what you want to do: Download http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13742, load it as non-active mod in the old CS (with none other mods selected, not even the Oblivion.esm. http://a.imageshack.us/img46/5232/30939042.jpg.), and go to Character → Quests -window. There is one quest listed, "Dialog". Go to the Topics -bar, and double-click on any of the texts there. This will bring up the Response Editor. http://a.imageshack.us/img69/9581/46667085.jpg. Be sure to have your .wav files in the same directory as is listed in the LIP template (...voice\LIPTemplate.esp\*race*\*gender*\). They must also have the same name as the dialog. http://a.imageshack.us/img204/6259/28430529.jpg Then just click on the race you want the LIP for, and click Generate Lip file in the Response Editor. This will create a .lip in the folder where the .wav is. Then convert the .wav to .mp3, put it into voice\*YourModsName*.esp\*Race*\*Gender*\ and correct it's name according to the name given by your mod's equivalent in the "New" CS' Response Editor.

Phew! Were I clear enough? :D

It works, thanks. :)

However, the lip file is all weird, because my NPCs mouth when speaking that line stays slightly open, and moves a wee bit every few seconds. Help?

I suppose you didn't edit the response text in the old CS? If this is the case, the NPC says "Dialog *number*" in-game :D That's what happened to me at least... The response text seems to have to be the same in both Construction Sets, so copy-paste the response text from the "New" one to the old one.

Nope, well spotted. :)

Well, I tried that just now and he moves his mouth more, but only like two movements after close three seconds.

(would renaming the lip file be part of the problem?)

I'm not sure... Did you try deleting the .lip -files you created, and then redoing the correct one?

I deleted it, and then made a new one with the subtitles, if that's what you're asking.

And it didn't work? Odd...

Can't you use wav files for lip-synching? I might be wrong but I'm sure I read it somewhere.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing. .Wav for generating the lipsync file (.lip), and .MP3 for the in-game sound.

Maybe your voice files have too much background sounds or they are bit unclear? It may prevent the Construction Set from making correct lip files.

Doubt it, I cleared all background noise from it via Audacity.

Dont know if the below will help any, i was searching for a mob who use to do all this kind of stuff that i stumbled upon ages ago, they would do it on behalf of the modders, where there speech actors for a pro touch, they would be good, but i cant find them

This i did stumble upon from google, dont know if it will help any
As I mentioned I can't guarantee the lipsynch will work, but if it does work then the wav file needs to be in this exact format:
Bitrate: 705kbps
Audio sample size: 16 bit
Channels: 1 (mono)
Audio sample rate: 44 KHz
Audio format: PCM

My formatting for the .wav was wrong. I saved it properly and re-generated the lip. It moves smoothly now, but only for a second or two, then it stops.

Nextmastermind, what happens if you just record your voice files and just delete empty spaces at the beginning and the end of the file and then try to make lip file? I have noticed that Construction Set is quite exact with voice files. Even putting two separate files together or cutting voice file from the middle may result really bad lip sync. I myself have never noticed that Construction Set requires specific wav format for lip files. Results have always been good if the wav files are good enough.

I'll give that a go, Hupukki, as there are a few seconds at the beginning, middle, and end with no sound. :)

And thanks for the link, Tigerpaws. :)
