I'd suggest heading to megaton, it's really close, no enemies in your way.

Just head towards the big wierd looking dome of scrapmetal, once your there, pick up a few quests, steal some stuff and sell it, buy a gun.

Have fun!!!

Look for a pointy metal place nearby. That's the town of Megaton where you can earn some money and buy some stuff. Check around the nearby ruins for containers. There's also a school to the northeast of Megaton that has guns in it. Of course you'll have to kill the people holding them first.

That's all you need really, just walk towards anything that looks interesting, there's tons of stuff around.

There's a town near by called Megaton, if continue straight after leaving the Vault you're almost run in to it (it's a bit to your right/south). You could try asking around there about your dad. :)

A good weapon? That depends on what weapon skill(s) you're focused on. It's also a better question for the Hints & Spoilers forum, but if you do stop by Megaton there's a store on the right side with a rather odd and enthusiastic proprietor. She has some errands you can do and you should encounter a lot of equipment on them.

And explore the whole area very carefully, there's a couple of spots nearby which have stuff that's just lying around. And here's a very subtle hint, leave no rock unturned.

That is the very reason why my husband cannot stand watching me play this game. ;)

Yes, it's a good game for people with OCD isn't it? After coming across things where I'd least expect them, I now find myself taking forever to get through an area while I check out everything. You just never know where stuff might be hidden.

basically that is what rpg is, taking your time to roam around and see what you can get.

I know, right? And he used to play WoW, which, to my understanding, is a lot of grinding. Yet he can't stand that I slink around and insist on checking every box/desk/locker/crate/mailbox/vending machine...

I admit that, while a newbie FO-enthusiast, I was hooked on Morrowind for years, just because right over that little, nondescript hill, was something that made me go, "how the heck did they get me to go to that place, and then put a quest in the middle of nowhere?" So, I started looking for the little things that Bethesda programmers like to use for visual cues.

I can't pretend like that does me any good in this new "environment" however. hehe. I will say that the cues are enough that even color-blind people like me can "sense" them.

Alas, I missed Morrowind entirely. I would love to find a copy, though, it is talked about so much, still. I do my gaming on the XBox 360 these days, but prior to meeting my now husband, who introduced me to Oblivion, my idea of RPG was Final Fantasy. How naiive I was...

err, maybe he's bored, some of my gamer peers (who are like hardcoe fps shooters and action based gaming prefered) find rpg boring, since this is my first rpg play (fallout 3) they just told me to have some fun with them, and actually in my mind i was going for a break because im from 'catch the flag of the other team' type of games mainly first person shooters and head on guns blazing.

I just want to play rpg (like fo3) to soothe and ease my mind from deliberate action in first shooter games i enjoyed in last few years.

maybe your husband is easily irritated when he sees something like this

No sir, he was the one who insisted on buying FO3 and I was like, ugh, another one of "those" games....and now guess who's logged far more hours and completed tons more quests? How embarrassing.
