Getting a gaming computer?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:04 am

Okay. Ever since the announcement of Skyrim, I have been wondering, mainly due to the extra support from mods and stuff that make it that much better, should I invest in a gaming computer? After doing a bit of searching i have realised, its a complicated world.
However I did find a computer, that looks promising? But I am not sure. I know we don't know the specs for the game, but basing it on Oblivion, and some the latest high end games to come out, do you reckon its any good?

Here is the specs I gathered from the page? Just tell me if you need any more info.

Lian Li PC60FNB Aluminium Case
Corsair TX 650W PSU
Intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz Processor
ASUS P6X58D-E USB 3.0 and SATA 600 Motherboard
6GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600MHz/PC12800 RAM
Nvidia GTX 460 768MB PCI Express Graphics Card
Seagate 1TB SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache Hard Drive
7.1 Surround Sound Audio
High speed DVD and CD Rewriter
2 Front and 8 Rear USB Ports + 2 USB 3.0 Ports
Gigabit Ethernet
Windows Vista and 7 ready

Also cost wise? Its listed for £929.35. I dont like getting ripped of, in fact who does? So is it worth every penny?
I hope you can help a very confused person out. Any help will be appreciated.

EDIT: Just one last thing, whats your opinion on the Alienware desktops. I saw them mentioned quite often while I was searching. Would they be any better?

I'd say that this doesn't really belong in the Skyrim general discussion and that it should be in the "Off-topic" or "Computing" sections, but those don't exist. I'll take a look and PM you if this gets locked.

Don't get Alienware.
By downgrading the ram to 1333 MHz you can either save money or get an extra 2 GB for a less than 1% performance difference. (Aka none)
Go with a WD Caviar Black hard drive. Faster and more reliable. Unless you're looking for a Velociraptor or RE4, the Black is the best. I bought one yesterday, myself.
With your system you may want to consider an SSD. Unless you go for a powerful hard drive (^^^ This or this ^^^) then your storage disk is guaranteed to be your bottleneck.
Only buy 7.1 sound card if you plan on getting all eight speakers
USB 3.0 is more future-proofing than anything.
Definitely get Windows 7 64-bit. Vista is not an alternative.

Overall it looks good, just consider the options I listed above.

I think you will probably get better feedback on the pricing http://forum.desktopreview.com/what-desktop-should-i-buy/

Yeah really wasnt sure where to post it. I am sorry about that. Okay I will take your suggestions. That was the basic build though? Dont think it can be down graded. Also, would change the processor from a i7 to i5 have much effect, while keeping around the same clock speed? Any particular reason for not getting Alienware?

Reason 2: They're ridiculously expensive

Reason 4: See reasons one through 3

Okay, will definitely consider these options. I have plenty of time before Skyrim comes out to make a final choice. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for that. The site looked promising.

Seems a fair enough reason.

I suggest you look into the new Sandy Bridge line CPUs/mobos from Intel/whoever over the I series. It's an oddity in the CPU market. It kicks the I7's in the teeth OC'd for pretty much the same cost. Normally, Intel would be charging twice as much (a lot more) for the new line. (The oddity.)

I wish I had waited myself. (Still happy with the I7 though!)
