Daggerfall Installation Help

Post » Sun Apr 03, 2011 1:46 pm

I'm trying to install Daggerfall and I'm on step 11 where it says: "Once the two locations are mounted, at the command prompt type: D:, then push enter and the prompt will change to D:\>." But everyone time I try to type it in the Prompt says: "Drive D doesn't exist! You must mount it first. Type intro or intro mount for more information." Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try retyping the command that start with "mount d". It sounds like it didn't take.

Hello, I would submit my installation problem on Daggerfall.

I used this help topic to install it on my Windows XP.
http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=479044
I am installing it from the downloaded version.

1st I'd like to mention I'm never able to deleate my useless copies of the patch I have in other folders... But, meh, I can live with that.
Everything went fine until the moment came to patch the game.

Now go back to DOSBox and type the following:
C:
CD..
RESCAN
DAG213

The patch will start to install itself. Answer yes on all the questions. After the patch installation is done, you can exit DOSBox. It's time to do some editing with notepad.

The way it's displayed I'll end up having the last line as c:\>DAG213
It won't work, of course. So I typed c:\>dagger\dag213 since the patch should and is in the dagger foolder.
But I get this message :
This is not your Daggerfall directory. This utilitary will ONLY work from your Daggerfall directory.

That's the preset directory and I left it that way when installing.
Well if c:\dagger\ is not my Daggerfall directory I don't understand anymore this installation...

Can someone help me to patch the game? I tried from outside Dosbox 0.73 double clicking the patch, but I can't get passed second element to patch... It tries to reach the information on the CD on drive D, which isnt there, of course, downloaded version.

I typed c:\>dagger\dag213

Should be c:\dagger\dag213

I have no idea where you got ">", but that's not a valid character for denoting paths in DOS...unless your Dagger folder is >Dagger...which wouldn't be right.

I didn't ?type? that >, I didnt explain well what I did, sorry. It's what displayed my line before pressing ?enter?. I only typed the ?dagger\dag213?
Thx for trying to help though. I really want to play that game.

Sorry if I misunderstood, but with DOS you have to be exact. There's no spellcheck, so if I see a wrong character I'm obliged to point it out.

What is the real path to your dagger folder? Is it C:\dosgames\dagger or something else? Also, is dag213 in that folder?

Thank you YojimBeau.

I extracted my files to c:\documents\dos\
The exact path where my stuff got installed is c:\program files\DOSBox-0.73\Games\DAGGER

I think that Games foolder was designated during the early steps of the guide, when I did ''MOUNT C GAMES -freesize 700''
Is that supposed to end up installed there? Maby this is where lies the problem.

(After that I did ''MOUNT D C:\Documents\DOS\DFCD -t cdrom -label Daggerfall'' so my D designated the foolder with the files to install.)

Thx again for helping.

Yeah, that's a problem...see, DOS doesn't like (or accept) spaces. Move the \Dagger folder to your C: drive (i.e. C:\dagger or c:\dosgames\dagger as suggested by gamesas) and you should get this to work by typing:

mount c c:\dagger
c:
dag213

Or, if you went with the gamesas suggestion:

mount c c:\dosgames\dagger
c:
dag213

Sweet, I didnt consider the space problem in the path. Thank you very much for your explanations.

I'm trying that a little later (perhaps tomorow) and I will post the result.

Ok I tried moving the foolder to a location the path wouldnt include a space :

Of course I first had to mount the D for the patch to find the ?CD?...

While patching, the DOSbox crashed. I tried again and it kept crashing. :( I don't know why it crashes.

Well thank you very much YojimBeau. You fixed my problem. It's just sad I'm stuck with a new one :(.

Someone could help me with the patch? After it starts installing DOSbox crashes. Perhaps it would be less likely to happen at a lower cycle rate? (I got an old computer.) I'll try that.
*tries*
Nope, it crashes anyway after the map patching (like previous times).

Anyone? :(

Thank you Mr. Oblivion.

I tried downloading the patch again, I named the new patch dag214.exe because
1st I'd like to mention I'm never able to deleate my useless copies of the patch I have in other folders... But, meh, I can live with that.
And then launched the patch (from inside DOSbox, of course) with dag214.
Still crashes at the same point of the patching process.

Hello, well I finally was able to install and patch the game corectly.

I started from scratch. And I used that link as a guide.
http://static.gamesas.com/downloads/games/daggerfall_legal_and_installation.pdf

The problem was obviously (well, I think...) that I didnt edit the config file of DOSbox to set memsize=32
Since it is the only thing I modified aside from files location.

I didnt do it the 1st time because I couldnt find the config file. Good reason : I deleated along with the foolder in my Start/programs menue. I thought it only contained useless shortcuts...

So thank you very much for your help. Now the patch works and the mystery is solved. :goodjob:

I'll look around other guides on the forum that covers details not mentionned in the PDF guide linked above to fix as much as possible before starting to play.

Woot! Thanks again for trying to help. It gave me a better understandment of the DOSbox.
