How many Dungeons(Caves, Forts, Mines etc.)

Post » Sun Apr 03, 2011 4:46 pm

Anyone know the total number of Dungeons, Caves, Mines, Fortresses etc. that are in Oblivion? How many in Shivering Isles?

Are there more than 16 Oblivion gates? (16 based on the screen that mentions 16 Daedra princes with their own portals to Oblivion)

Just curious as I am crawling back and forth across Cyrodil just exploring dungeons on my 2nd play through the game.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Places (or most) in OB... :)

As for Oblivion gates... depending on how you play through the main quest will drive how many gates you see. There are 10 fixed gates that will always spawn as you progress through the MQ. There are a possible additional 50 gates that could spawn... and each gate will have one of the 7 different Oblivion worlds for you to go through. The number of spawns popping up will increase or decrease depending on where you are in the MQ and of course your wandering through the world. There are 90 potential spots were a random gate could spawn.

I have gotten up to 57 gates closed, in a few play throughs, where I had a goal to close every gate I could find. :)

Sweet! Sounds like around 225 dungeons and 90 possible Oblivian Portals. I knew they said over 200 dungeons back in the day! I'm probably about 50% through those so it is nice to know I still have 100+ to crawl through.

I have 14 Oblivion portals so far so far and was hoping for more than 16. I purposely have stopped the main quest after reaching Cloud Ruler Temple this time around because of that. (and because I wanted a Samurai Sword which I long since replaced).

I think I already hit the 25 or so listed for Shivering Isles. That was the first thing I did this play through as I never played it first trek through the game.

Yes, loads of dungeons, and they respawn if you leave them for 3 days so it can be endless! :twirl:

Here is loads of info on Oblivion Gates: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion_Gates
The further you go into the Main Quest the more gates open. Leydenne gave you correct info, but it sounds like you misunderstood it just a tiny bit. There are 10 fixed gates and up to 50 more random gates. The 50 random gates can spawn on top of any of 90 random locations. So. . . max of 60 gates. :)

Once you complete the Main Quest, any gates remaining open automatically close.

Cool I never noticed they respawn because I clear every dungeon as soon as I encounter it. Then if I hit one again I know I was there because of the interior map. It is nice to know that after I get through this initial sweep of Cyrodil, I can come back and randomly hit stuff with more monsters. But the treasure will stay open/emptied right?

Some of the containers will remain as you left them, but most will respawn new contents.

Others have provided you with the correct info, but I'd just like to add that all the portals to Oblivion lead to Mehrunes Dagon's realm. The only exceptions are
Spoiler
two portals connected to Boethia's and Peryite's quests
, but even these two are based on the regular Oblivion realms you'll find during the main quest.

Actually a little more than that...
One of my characters documented over 350 different locations, including the SI.

I get the impression OP was asking about 'dungeons'. My goodness, if we add in all the towns, settlements, camps, landmarks, Daedric Shrines, the number of 'locations' really grows. :ahhh:

My documentation was for forts, caves, ruins only. Nothing else.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:100%25_Completion is the most appropriate Wiki page for the "I want to do them all" crowd. It lists all the places in the Bethesda-supplied content, more can be added by user-written mods if you're on a PC.

It also details the problem with hitting that elusive 60 figure for the Oblivion Gates. I've never done more than about 30 with any character, as you can only use so many Sigil Stones, and with only a limited number of layouts they get rather boring.

I do note that if you return to the same random world then the local map is already exposed, although I don't remember if the Sigil Tower is named the same as the last time you visited. Since many of them add variety by having random tunnels and random towers, that may be misleading.
