Anyone Surprised by Brink's Rating?

Post » Tue Apr 05, 2011 3:13 pm

Not at all surprised. I thought it was "T" from the beginning. ^_^

I just noticed that this game doesn't have blood (or does it) when you shoot someone, I think. (I don't mind either way, but I'm one of those who do not like to see tons of blood and gore and choose censor options for my M-rated, games, hehe. Which is why I will never play a Fallout or Dead Space game in this lifetime, lol.).

watch some gameplay, there is a lot of blood... also its rated T for blood so...

I went back and re-watched some gameplay, and there was blood there. But it's not really bad. It's not a TON of blood and ridiculous amount of gore (slow-motion head explosion in Fallout comes to mind) like some M-rated games, lol. In fact, the bloody parts of Brink went by so fast, I almost forgot it was there. :D

I am wondering how much swearing in the game there is (can't remember from gameplay videos).
In Killzone 2, I was surprised and amused by how much Rico swore every few seconds, lol. I was like, dude, learn some more words( even if it's more swear words, heh  )!

What's the problem of it being T vs M. It just means you don't have to be 17 which means more possible buyers......

That's not what it means at all, let me reiterate my last statement:
What I'm trying to get at here is that I'm angry because most game companies deliberately limit the graphic nature of their games and the language in hopes that they'll be able to sell it to a larger audience, when those of younger ages will convince their parents to buy a game even if it has an "M" rating. I'm not talking 'graphic' as in porm, either. I mean bullet holes in bodies and a little bit of gore when grenades or mines go off. The physics and graphics in World at War were a good start to this, but perhaps you shouldn't have been able to completely explode your opponents. And you don't have to go overboard with the language, like they did in Bulletstorm. Just make it realistic is all I'm saying - both kids and advlts alike will buy and play the game if they think it is cool, regardless of the rating.

If you STILL decided not to read all that, then I'll give you the basic summary - Game companies have to limit the graphic nature of their games and the type of language spoken in order to achieve a "T" rating. The problem with this is that kids will convince their parents to buy said games regardless of their ratings. This is why you have so many pre-adolescent kids playing games like Gears of War, Dante's Inferno, and Call of Duty. Those games are all heavily punctuated with gore, and in some cases foul language.

Was I surprised that Brink is T? I'll let my good buddy tell you my answer.

SP kept on saying they wanted it to be T anyway.

I expected it to be rated T, but if it got an M rating I wouldn't have been surprised.

I spent a good 6-7 months playing Reach trying to figure out how it was rated M. Then, I got a headshot with a DMR on the side of a guy's head at close range when his shields were down. It exploded. Now I understand.

But compared to games like Call of Duty, where you're stabbing people in the throats with Bowie knives and slinging the F bomb everywhere and seeing blood spray out of people in the cutscenes to even seeing guys have their eyes graphically melt out of their face while their skin deteriorates to even shooting unarmed civilians in an airport ("Remember, No Russian"), which also have an M rating Halo seems like it could be rated T, if not E10+... Anything small could have caused the rating on the game to go up and many of us would likely not even know why. Hell, there probably IS something in it that'd make it be rated M, but the ESRB didn't encounter it...

Doesn't bother me, as it's not intended to be a realistic game.

What would bother me is if it was a realistic shooter game, set in the real world, and didn't have any language whatsoever. Sorry, but it would just sound asinine hearing stuff like, "GOSH DARN IT! GRENADE! GET THE HECK OUT OF THERE!" or "FIDDLESTICKS! I'VE BEEN HIT!"

gosh darn gets a bad rap. it sounds pretty cool

the rating discussion is weird, why would you care if it's rated lower. from what we've seen so far it's pretty sanitary from a violence pov, blood but not gore. unless setting people on fire is graphicly done i don't see how you could expect it to go M.

the reasons that have been presented so far are pushing the limits of disbelief. swearing is the salt and pepper of language. it can add some spice but if you know how to prepeare the dish you can get the meal across without any. so complaining it would have been cut down is being foolish. 9/10 of the time you can simply omit the swearing from the script, still get the point across and sound less ridiculous. those actors can't swear to save their lives and it always comes off sounding forced.

reduced gore, it's an objective multiplayer game, not a murder simulator. the gore is never necessary, making someone's head explode doesn't cap the next command centre. it's down to design choice if they include it at all and SD seems to have limited themselves to blood, no gore. one way or another it's little more than cosmetic. someone mentioned exploding people. brink grenades don't even kill people last i heard.

the only other things that would have gotten a higher rating are strippers and six scenes. i don't know if women even exist in brink.

i was making a statement, not starting a discussion. women have not been seen in the brink world at all. it's possible there is no female bodies at all in brink. so the possibilities of strippers or six scenes moves in a direction that probably would earn an r rating.

Unless their is nudity or graphic murder it shouldn't be rated M

I will never understand what it is about nudity that makes americans go nuts. I'd say kids can cope much better with naked people than mutilated bodies. I'd agree if this was about graphical display of six, but some people scream for M or advlt only if you see a single boob for a splitsecond. Weird imo.

Makes sense, rather have a kid see a naked body then a messed up body with blood everywhere and such which will make them cry themselves to sleep every night O_O

I won't either, and I actually live in America. I'd seen plenty of nudity as a kid and not thought about it for a second, but seeing movies that involved blood and death (SAW!!!!!!!) gave me nightmares. The shower curtain in my bathroom to this day stays open when nobody is in there just because of those days of watching horror movies I shouldn't have when I was a kid...

Thanks for the reminder of Psycho

Back on topic: I like the fact its rated T, I'd rather not have to talk to my brother to go in and get the game. I really don't like him. But, yeah, lets just say its good to see a rated T I actually want to go get.

I am quite happy about this. Mainly because there isn't any forced badditude. Case and point, Bad Company 2 and the Battlefield Series. Battlefield has always been comic-bookish and war hero rather than war drama, and Bad Company made a name by being very light hearted. Bad Company 2, however, added pointless swearing and melodrama. The only thing lighthearted and fun was the idle chats, the smiley grenades (that you could barely notice), and this theme about the motivation. I wanted this game to be somewhat gritty but not over-saturated with grit.
