I think if Skyrim was real,it would be like Norway and Finland mixed together.

I think Skyrim will look amazing. I think in motion, it will silence many of the haters. Crysis looks great, but a game like Skyrim can't look as good as Crysis. And I don't expect it to. Next gen big RPG's will look even better than these shots.

All shots are from retail Crysis with mods( Cryengine 2)

In fact, I think Skyrim, maybe after a texture mod or two, and some "Skyrim Graphics Extender" work, will look very similar and in some cases better to these shots.

Oblivion with a texture pack and OBGE looks right up there with Crysis(In certain areas) on PC. (In part because OBGE ports Crysis Warheads DoF directly into Oblivion)

I'd be just fine with graphical quality (with a color and lightinguse) like http://sandbox.darrenbrant.com/wp-content/themes/yashfa/images/default-image.jpg or http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/7545/arma2new19.jpg

Me too, however ARMA is a very graphically intensive game, and those screens aren't the most flattering of the engine. That said, I expect Skyrim will be more impressive than Arma II in some aspects. (Which is saying a lot, at times ARMAII looks photo-real.)

I heard in one of the behind the scenes videos that it was a lot like Alaska, with forests in the south and tundra in the north.

Crash, lag, buggy.

Isn't that what characterizes OB:s/FO3:s/FO NV:s now very outdated-looking Gamebryo-version? :P

I don't know about that... Norway has some of the world's most impressive, majestic landscapes in my opinion, and the Alps are pretty small-time as far as mountain ranges go. They don't compare with the Himalayas or Rockies or Andes.

Like others have said despite there being a ton of threads this could've been posted in nonetheless thank you for posting it.

Very awe-inspiring and breathtaking scenery. The stunning mountains poking through the mist at the beginning, the clarity of the water next to the vast forests, each tree with the snow draqed on it. I hope Skyrim is like this. Especially at http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/72/mosssnowcovered.png I want to see that kind of detail hopefully. The moss on the rocks and on the tree. Snow covering the rocks and caught on the tree side moss sticking to it in blotches. With some plantlife, like the hardy snowberry plant, sprouting up through the snow, near the rocks where the overhanging rock covers the ground and there not much if any snow.

Problem with trying to make realistic mountains is trying to squeeze them into the limited world size we're having in games. They're massive structures, and if keeping them at natural slopes while being tall, they're also going to be incredibly large at the base.

Furthermore, the video is extremely treated with an S-Curve, causing excessive amounts of contrast. So, no, that's not what I want the game to look like. In Daggerfall size? Sure. In Skyrim? Not enough room for other structures.

To me it does ;)

I don't understand why so many people want Skyrim to be full of mountains with nothing but rocks and grass on them.

I think Skyrim will look amazing. I think in motion, it will silence many of the haters. Crysis looks great, but a game like Skyrim can't look as good as Crysis. And I don't expect it to. Next gen big RPG's will look even better than these shots.

Screenshots don't capture the same feel as games in motion - they just can't, not with fancy shader or lighting effects.
A nice case in point is that games such as, say, Uncharted 2 look good in motion, but static screenshots more often than not look quite poor. Screenshots are not a viable method of looking at graphics anymore.

I think the dev team should just concentrate on making the game look like real environments and just forget about adding quests, NPCs, creatures, or anything else. In fact, just make environments and let us wander through it.

/satire off. ;)

Yeah, one typical workday of a Bethesda employee

8:00 -Write new snow shader to appear on beards, make optimizations to engine
9:00 -Make some unique sword modeling and texturing
11:00 -Some combat animations for mammoth creatures
12:00 -Eat vegetables
13:00 -Write some quests. Write Fast Travel dialog for Mammoth drivers.
15:00 -Work on some realistic environment design
16:00 -Play Skyrim

That must be what 100 people doing all this time and next 10 months. Making your programmer to work on animations, and animators on dialog to save resources. Explains a lot actually...
