I will never know with questions like 'I have never used DOSBox before that nobody suggests getting a front end GUI like D.O.G. or D-FEND reloaded!

After all if you had someone saying they knew nothing about PC's and was asking if they should buy a DOS OS PC or a Windows OS PC, you would surely say a Windows OS PC! Well, as far as I am concerned, DOSBox is the DOS PC and D.O.G or D-Fend are the Windows PC!

I know DOSBox, and I can set up prety much any DOS game in DOSBox, but as I have so many DOS games on my PC I just find it so much easier to use a GUI front end!

There is a thread elsewhere about the best shader to use. One poster pointed out where in the DOSBox conf file you would need to change the shader name. For each shader then, you would go back into the Conf file and change it, then try again. In D.O.G. all I had to do was click on the Shaders tab, click on what shader I wanted to try,
click on the profile tab and double click the Daggerfall profile to start the game. Now which of those two would be easier for a total noob? And yet, in my experience, no one every suggests a GUI front end for people like this OP and others in this thread! Is it any wonder really, that noobs go to console. Because we don't seem to really want to help them, like with these guys. Just pointing out that the installation is straightforward when they have said it confuses them!

We need to have more empathy to newbies and think about it from their point of view. A lot of posters here are just talking as though because they know DOSBox inside out, the newbies should too - straight away! Well how about giving them a helping hand by suggesting a GUI front-end? After all a couple clicks and occasion data typing is a lot easier than explaining

Mount c:c:\dosgames
Mount dc:\dossgames\DFCD -t cdrom

etc etc!

I find it more authentic to use DOSBox from the console. Different tastes, I guess. Not to mention it's annoying to set up all those commandline programs like AndyPic in the the GUI.

I had the exact same problem, untill I remembered that you have to right click and drag (and click again) to actually swing the sword.

If you have a problem seeing things at floor level, i.e. rats etc. then move away a little, and you should be able to see them. Then just right click and drag the mouse around. The mouse responds to your actions e.g. if you move it to from left to right, the sword will also move from left to right.

If you're still having trouble, please hit esc. This will bring up the menu, then please go into controls and select mouse. You can then change the view form cursor to view mode. This will make the game play a lot like Morrowind; you can then look up and down etc. Hitting enter, I think? will probably make it so that you have a cursor even in view mode. (based on what I have seen posted here on the forums).

I am sorry, but I see no mention at all of DBGL in this two page thread. You may have mentioned it in another thread, but that's good, because I think the first answer should always be to the statement 'I don't understand DOSBox' not to be 'learn DOSBox', but rather say 'have you considered a graphic interface mod for DOSBox so you don't need to learn the DOS type commands of DOSbox which for people not used to DOSBox can be very intimidating'!

I installed Daggerfal by using this link and followed the instructions to the letter: http://static.gamesas.com/downloads/games/daggerfall_legal_and_installation.pdf

BUT

It gives THIS error: "Looks like you inserted the wrong CD. Please insert your Daggerfall CD in your cdrom and try again."

Wrong CD? After I did the install as per the link, above? To the letter? :( :(

AND

Stranger still.

The instructions say, "At the C:\Dagger> prompt, type: DAGGER. Press Enter. Daggerfall should now load." WRONG. It dropped me to the windows environment. :(

Also:

I had to manually edit the dosbox config file, as the install didn't have a way to access it.

I have used Dosbox heaps of times b4, and KNOW how to edit configs.

By the way, I don't have a folder "dfinstall". I'ts "dosgames"

By the way, I have been a comp tech from 1988 onwards, so I was IN DOS from the start. I remember DOS 1. DOS is second nature to me, in other words :)
