FPS Issues

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 4:40 am

Alright, I looked around the website and the best thing I found that could help me regarding this issue was in the mod faq. Unfortunately, the performance guide didn't exactly give me what I wanted. I don't know if it's my PC or the game but my FPS has recently touched the floor. I downloaded the More Than AEVWD mod. You know, the mod to make long distances buildings and environments appear just as if they were in front of you. With that mod, my FPS is really really low. My PC is quite powerful, that's what I don't get. I used to play the game on the highest settings and it ran perfectly with no FPS issues. I have no problems playing games like Fallout 3 or Call of Duty Modern Warfare to at maximum settings so I wonder, why would Oblivion ruin my FPS like that. I think the mod is the main problem and I wanted to know if anyone had a solution or some tips to help me improve my FPS without uninstalling the mod. These are my settings:

Intel Core Duo CPU 8400 3.0GHZ(Rated at 5.418GHZ)

4GB RAM

Geforce GTS 250 2.2 GB(Vertex Shader 4.0 and Pixel Shader 4.0)

Direct X 10

Windows 7

Sorry if I'm basically duplicating a topic, I've spent the entire day tweaking options in my game so I could play it at a decent speed with that mod installed. I also have QarlTP3 installed. I had it installed before the More Than AEVWD mod was installed and the frame rate was still smooth, so I assume that mod has nothing to do with my FPS taking a slap in the face. Thank you.

That mod is expected to kill your FPS. Use Arthmoor's Really Almost Everything Visible When Distant instead. It has been optimized well. Anyhow, your graphics card is not that great for running QTP3 plus any other big texture/mesh replacer. Oblivion can still bring down PC's much more suped up than your setup. Your CPU OC'ed like that is probably not good either. This is one of the few cases on the forums today where the bottleneck is the GPU, but that is because you installed that super ridiculous VRAM-eating mod. You have to get rid of it if you want playable FPS again. Take some screen shots and uninstall it. What is your FPS range?

My FPS is usually in the 60 range, even with QarlTP3 it was still around 60. With More Than AEVWD it lowers all the way to the 3-4 range when I look at detailed areas. When I turn around to look at less detailed areas, it gets back to a respectable range within the 30's.

I was expecting it to slow down my PC, but these messages about FPS killing were way back in '07, I expected my card could handle that. Damn, had I another thing coming.

No. When you have your HD4870 or HD5870 or another video card with 896MB or greater VRAM. You will get better FPS. Your CPU and GPU must be dying from heat.

Try RAEVWD without the RAEVWD City Plugins that will help alot. Rerun tes4lodgen without selected in load order should give you a fps boost..

A little mistake there. I have 2.2GB of video RAM not 512. Sorry.

What?! You have 2.2GB of VRAM on a single video card? The nVidia GTS 250?

Edit: ...VRAM and RAM are not the same thing. That model is not made with 2.2GB of VRAM. 2.2GB of VRAM is a stinking amazing video card, not to mention extremely expensive. I am pretty sure you were right the first time. However, 2.2GB of RAM is not helping you either. Modded Oblivion gets to running at over 1.2GB pretty quickly...You can see the problem there.

Yeah. Unless my PC is giving false numbers I do. Is this a bad thing?

No you don't, sorry, the Geforce GTS 250 comes in 512MB or 1 GB GDDR3 VRAM. What the OS reports will be VRAM + system shared ram for video, which is is not the same as deciated VRAM.

It seems you are right. I have 512MB of dedicated VRAM. I almost had a heart attack with your reaction guys. For a second I thought I was killing my PC.

Thanks a lot, read it. I'll just get rid of that mod. I'll try it again when I'll have a more powerful PC. I didn't think I'd even have issues with the frame rate but it seems I was wrong. I don't know but this mod eats a lot of power for very very little graphics enhancements. It's really good but the power requirement is just totally insane. Thank you guys, I'd be spending my entire week trying to raise my FPS if it weren't for you. I'll uninstall that mod ASAP. Thanks again.

30FPS is very good for running Oblivion. You will probably find few who get that FPS range with a heavily modded setup. You would definitely not have that FPS range with a heavily modded setup, unless you stayed away from big, highrez texture replacers. Your CPU is pretty good.

I'll probably update my video card. Hope I won't get problems uninstalling that mod. I'll try to install it in 5 years or so, just to see if it runs smoothly.

I have a terrible system and I can run some parts of RAEVWD without a problem. I only need to see dungeon entrances, so that's fine. It just sounds like you need to drop the older mod.

Arthmoor has done a great job optimizing RAEVWD. Even if you did upgrade your video card, I would still recommend his over any of the alternatives. It supports a number of different mods too.
