Help - water looks awful

Post » Thu Apr 07, 2011 11:04 pm

I'm playing the Morrowind GOTY with MGE and a number of other mods. The problem I've got is that on the map water shows as black. Otherwise, AFAICT, the look of water in the game looks right when my PC is walking around. Previously, I was playing MW w/ Tribunal (did not have Bloodmoon then) on the same pc (no change to hardware), and everything looked fine (color of water on the map was not black and could tell difference between explored and unexplored areas along the coast line).

Does anyone else have this problem? It really throws me off when I'm looking at the map because there's no way to distinguish between water areas I've been and those areas that are unexplored.

What do I need to do to fix it?

Thanks,

John

Trying this in the mods forum. It may be an MGE glitch.

I've had something like this once. It had to do with the water shader MGE uses. It could also be the textures. Maybe it'll help if you download a new water shader, heres one for example:

There are many others.

Could also be a distance land problem, did you play around with the static sizes and stuff there? Or lower the quality settings ?

If none of it works you can always uninstall and start over. That usually solves most issues.

I still have the problem with the color of the water that appears in the world map screen. The problem is that the color of the water for those areas in the world map screen over which my character has swam, water walked or levitated looks black and for my eyes is indistiguishable from those areas that I have not yet explored. This is a major problem for me as I roam Morrowind; I rely on being able to look at the world map screen to get my bearings and to visually see where I have been and haven't been. I have no problem with the color of the water that is displayed in the game screen itself.

I used to have only MW with Tribunal. In those games, the water on the world map screen would either be black if it was unexplored or IIRC a shade of blueish green if I had explored that area. It was apparent from looking at the world map what areas I had explored and deciding where to go next.

I bought the GOTY edition with MW, Tribunal and Bloodmoon and have installed the following mods (MGE is installed):
_001_ Morrowind.esm
_002_ Tribunal.esm
_003_ Bloodmoon.esm
_004_ GOTYFullTidyZeroMpp.esm
_005_ Morrowind Patch v1.6.4.esm
_006_ Better Heads Bloodmoon addon.esm
_007_ RealSignposts.esp
_008_ entertainers.esp
_009_ AreaEffectArrows.esp
_010_ adamantiumarmor.esp
_011_ EBQ_Artifact.esp
_012_ Wyr Jeweler v1.01 c.120.esp
_013_ AtmosphericSoundEffects-3.0-Tribunal.esp
_014_ Sound Enhancements.esp
_015_ Wilderness Sounds T & B.esp
_016_ WholeStorm's RobePack.esp
_017_ Unique Banners and Signs.esp
_018_ Better Bodies.esp
_019_ DXM_masterindex_journalfix.esp
_020_ Eyren_Robes.esp
_021_ k_weather.esp
_022_ GOTYSTMPPPatch.esp
_023_ Better Clothes_v1.1.esp
_024_ VGreetings.esp
_025_ VGreetings-Flee.esp
_026_ New Argonian Bodies - Mature.esp
_027_ New Khajiit Bodies - Mature.esp
_028_ VGreetings-Idle.esp
_029_ VGreetings-Thief.esp
_030_ SkillUpLedger.esp
_031_ Rich_Creeper.esp (increased Creeper's money only)

AFAICT, they all are playing nice with one another. One comment I received suggested that I focus on MGE and mentioned shaders. Though that is useful, it doesn't help me because MGE's documentation seems geared for specialists using technical terminology who want and/or need to get involved in programming. Nor does it help to recommend trying different settings or shaders unless the steps I need to follow are laid out in detail.

My first question is, given the mods I'm using, is MGE the mod that affects the color of the water in the world map screen?

Two, if I need to tweak MGE, what part of it needs tweaking?

Three, KISS, what steps do I need to follow to do so?

Four, I am familiar with RGB color wheels and with the alternative choice of numeric values (0-255) for colors. Does MGE have a setting(s) that allow me to select the colors for water that has been explored on the world map screen? Again, be specific because I'm using MGE because it is so highly recommended for game satisfaction and reducing some technical glitches, not because I have technical expertise in what it does.

Thanks,

John

P.S.: If this should be moved underneath the MGE thread, fine. I posted it in the general mod discussion because I don't know if the issue even involves MGE.

The core MGE options do not have any direct adjustments for color settings nor does MGE purposely change those settings. Some shaders can modify hue, tint, contrast and brightness, but those changes usually affect the entire display and not just a specific aspect like the world map water.

Does the problem continue if you disable/remove MGE from the game session? That will immediately determine whether MGE is possibly influencing the world map display.

If the problem only occurs when MGE is enabled, please continue your post in the MGE thread. Make sure to provide all the info requested as noted at the top of the OP under *Attention* (version of MGE you're using is most important).

I followed your suggestion, deactivated MGE and saw a difference in the water color in the world map screen using a saved game. Therefore, I've added a reply to the MGE thread with a recap of my problem and the info requested in the ATTENTION section of the OP. Hopefully, that will help troubleshoot where the problem is happening.

Thanks,

John
