MGE Problem - Unable to find a version of the runtime...

Post » Thu Apr 07, 2011 6:33 pm

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question in regards to MGE - I've never encountered this one before!

I recently went back to a computer with XP installed on it and decided to mess around with MGE. So I went off and installed the latest Direct X 9.0C, Visual runtime 2010, .Net 4 and all of that, and I got the message "Unable to find a version of the runtime needed to run this application". I am using the very newest beta version but I also tried it with the stable version and got the same message.

any ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

SOLVED - For anyone who reads this - make sure you have EXACTLY what the MGE wiki suggests you need to run the program - it HAS to be the old version of everything!

Have you tried posting in the MGE thread?

The MGE thread says you need Microsoft Visual C++ 2008, do you have that? I don't think the 2010 version includes all the same things that the 2008 version has.

The .Net 4.0 contains lower versions of .Net, but the Visual C++ Runtimes are unique each edition and don't include previous ones. You will need to specifically download and install 2008, as povuholo said.

That's good to know. So if I get 4.0 I won't need any older ones?

I saw that thread, but it's about 81 pages long which means it would take forever to get my question answered! haha.

I'm currently downloading 2008 to see if it works.

EDIT - Looks like it's not Visual Runtime that's the problem, at the top of the same error dialogue it has .NET framework initialisation error.

It did that twice - I initially installed .Net 3.5 and then after the same message I went with no. 4.

In windows 7 I thought this was a problem with UAC, but in XP I don't know what it is?

EDIT 2.0 - I'm downloading .NET 2.0, since I read somewhere else (not related to morrowind) that a .NET error usually means it requires the old version to run. Looks like .NET 4 doesn't cover it all :(

Edit 3 - All downloaded - don't get a .NET initialisation error anymore, BUT now MGEgui just crashes before it loads. The only other thing that ISN'T old is directx 9.0C august 2009 - I have jul 2010 edition. Why the hell do I have to keep downloading older stuff?

I'm not entirely sure. I want to say yes, but you/I would have to check the MS docs. However, using Windows Update is a good way to keep .Net up to date, and that will make sure you have the important stuff.

If you take the time to read thru the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1135315-morrowind-graphics-extender-mge/, you will find the links to all correct versions required as well as troubleshooting help in the FAQ lower down that post.

The reason for the MGE thread is precisely to ask these sorts of questions - by posting there you will get the attention your issue deserves, and by solving your issue give benefit to someone else who might be having a similar issue with MGE. Please consider posting in the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1135315-morrowind-graphics-extender-mge/ if you need further help, that way we can keep all MGE related issues in one thread. ;)

And on that note, we can close this. :)
