Does “ICE PHISICS” even exist ?

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 6:45 am

Would be great if ice acts as destructable environment. Which is fully possible to implement.

Just imagine how cool a battle on an ice-covered lake could be. You meet some big nord with a big big axe. You fight him, he misses you when you dodge his attack and hits the ice. The ice breaks and he falls down in the frozen lake, dying from hypothermia or by drowning.

Hm. I wonder if Bethesda will take into account the effect freezing water has on the body. In Lord of the Rings Online, you actually rapidly lose health if you swim in freezing water.

Well I sure hope so. Where applicable of course. May vary with season.

I could see the "slippin' 'n slidin'" getting really old really fast, but it could have interesting applications if it applied to npcs as well.. Maybe if you could have freeze/ slime traps.. or even just use it to evade enemies by tricking them into falling into water/thin ice.

The type of ICE Physics I was referring to in the first post,
is something like in the movies below.

Walking on thin ice

(That sound of the ice cracking is epic)

I guess HAVOK does not include ICE Physics.

They'll better make the ice good and not just some layer of land like in Bloodmoon. There are going to be vampires living beneath the ice, grabbing you as you walk by you know... Nothing confirmed, but THEY'LL BETTER!

If it's a form of motion physics, you can bet a guy at a university somewhere has modelled it on a supercomputer. All Beth has to do is find the guy and consult with him.

edit: or gal, of course.

Some of the water physics simulations they've done are truly amazing. And been completely stolen by the gaming industry (with permission, of course).

I have a perfect example of ice physics. While at Ft Drum NY, one of my friends stepped onto a patch of ice and promptly slipped, fell and busted his ass. I proceeded to laugh at the big oaf, who then struggled to his feet and tackled me onto the previously mentioned patch of ice. It's cold and slippery, with hilarious results when in strategic locations.

Star Wars The Force Unleashed early demos had some physics demostration, and it showed amazing wood, ice, jelly physics. Though having good physics in games costs a lot of performance. I'd rather not having it, it would sacrifice gameplay.

I wonder how flexible the Havok physics is. Maybe you can set up an interface for people to choose what physics they want to be present. I've never worked directly with Havok physics so I don't know if that is possible. If it is, that would be great. That way they could have the most consuming physics checked off but you can choose to turn them on if you have the gaming rig to do it.

Ice physics would be interesting to see if it reacted realistically, it would be great also if the ice changed in small subtle ways like it melting a little bit, and some more ice forms in certain areas that would be amusing to see.

I wouldn't think of slippery ice as annoying, as 90% of the time it would be your own choice to walk on ice or detour. But if we had full slippery simulation, imagine the humor of having two Bambies on ice fighting for their live. I welcome it.

With a good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcdKHA6f7qM you can emulate any kind of material.

Physics for ice exist, but it would be still too early for realistic ice in a game. Maybe in 5 to 10 years.

Wow. Just wow.

I SOOOOOO can imagine falling and struggling to get up XD

I wouldn't mind "crappy" physics in such a situation actually,I'd rather LMAO XD

And you think to yourself "Oh no, I only have fifty years before that glacier reaches the road....and another twenty before it blocks it. I'd better hurry".

 Small change not glaciers coming at me small changes to ice sickles around doors different ice formations in the frozen areas nothing as grand as an Ice Age, you seem to be having to much 2012 on the brain.

Well surely toward the north there will be some Ice Glaciers. Even if you go up north in Canada you can see glaciers.

And don't bring up 2012, because all of that is just some BS that the corporate mechanism, i.e. "The Man", has cooked up to keep us down.

Slappin' your forehead at me with your emoticon, don't bring that bad juju in my house!

I laughed when you wrote off 2012 as a conspiracy theory with a conspiracy of your own. 2012 is just the end of the Mayan calendar just like December 31 is the end of our calendar. It has nothing to do with the end of the world or "The corporate mechanism".

I like to think of 2012 as the Y2K of Mayan technology.

Just saying I am sure there will be glaciers to the north why wouldent there be unless some freak accident.

Also the topic of "2012" is funny thats why I wrote the comparisson, of course its idiotic.

Abouit the emoticon just trying to relay a sense of ugh, it would be unsettling to see a glacier creeping towards me as you mentioned...

Yeah if a calander ends it does not signal the end of days. I think its more paranoia opposed to a government conspiacy.
