I have tried every alleged solution under the sun. Some people get this game to run without any problems ever or they apply a simple fix (core limiting, disable some codecs, run in windowed mode, update drivers) or a moderately time consuming fix (things like the Skullptura fix, dual boot with windows XP).

I have registered here because I realize there has to be some way to fix it.

I'm at a complete loss. I am basically at the point that I think that this game is not going to be playable for me. It is entirely unpredictable. Every time I try a new fix, I delete all my save games and do a completely fresh install.

I play the game through Steam, and it crashes for me in XP, Vista, and 7 (7 being my favored OS).

While I realize Fallout 3 isn't officially supported for 7 (which shouldn't make a difference considering the vast library of other games that are not but work without any complications), it is supposed to be for Vista and XP. I have the same issues in both of them that I have in 7. When the issue first started happening, I had gone quite a ways into a play-through (level 24, to Vault 87 in main story) before I started to get freezing (first happened in Paradise Falls) within 5-10 minutes of loading my save. This occurrence could be postponed on the next start up by not playing the game for about 24 hours. It would freeze after an hour or so, and any attempt to restart would yield another freeze within 15 minutes.

I will simply list what I have tried, to see if anybody has any other wise ideas before I give up on ever being able to play this game on PC.

1. Closing all unnecessary processes (yielded best consistent results, but still only 45 minutes max before a freeze over the course of two days but eventually degraded to 10-15 minute freezes again).
2. bUseThreadedAI=1 and iNumHWThreads=2 (also tried this with iNumHWThreads=1, no improvements)
3. LAA Enabler
4. Alchemy to restore EAX functionality [this was a solution listed on the Fallout Wiki both for crashing and radio music stuttering (not related to static)]
5. Tried both Vista and XP
6. Updated all drivers.
7. Unofficial patch.
8. Skullptura fix (this is one that was promising for about a week before I began to have frequent and rapid freezes again)
9. Checked k-lite codec pack, but newest version automatically excludes Fallout 3 in ffdshow.
10. Since I'm running the game through Steam, I did a Steam "check integrity of game cache" or whatever it's called yesterday morning. It found that three files were missing (lolwut) and reacquired them. Still didn't help.

Most recent fresh install (yesterday morning) leads to freezing during the birthday party every time as Andy cuts the cake. This is when it always happens. Previously I always made it at least out of Vault 101 without any issues. This leads me to believe there is something very specific causing it. I'm using no mods. GOTY edition, all DLC's activated. Unofficial patch.

This has all been done over the course of three months. New Vegas runs flawlessly. The only problem I ever had was with the flashing caused by AA when it was first released. Since the nvidia driver update that fixed it, it seems like a nearly flawless game.

So, any other possible solutions? There may even be things I tried earlier on that I forgot.

Have you tried installing the latest K-Lite Codec Pack Mega, and running Codec Tweak Tool, from K-Lite Codec Pack\Tools in the Start Menu?

Also, for Windows 7 or Vista, have you installed the game outside of the default location? In, for example, C:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3 instead, or whatever looks good to you.

That's all I can think of right now. :shrug: If I remember anything else, I'll post it when I get the time.

Thanks, I will try the very newest version and the tweak tool.

Edit: Also, it's in the default location for a Steam installation. ...steam/steamapps/common/fallout 3 goty

Also, what exactly should I be looking for with the tweak tool?

Okay, it seems I was able to fix the quick crashing by not using Alchemy. Seems there is something with Alchemy + Win7 that screws with the game, so I want to recommend that nobody do that. However, the problem I have now is right after the part of Vault 101 where Butch asks you to save his mom, the came crashes to desktop when I try to go through the door to the atrium. In the event viewer, this is the error I'm getting. I don't really understand what I should be gathering from it.
