School RP

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:48 am

This is just the idea thread, as I don't have a major plotline or anything down. I'm just presenting my ideas and letting the community mess with them. So, read on, and criticize. DO IT.

I mean, I look through the index of the TES RP, and all I see is action/adventure, so I think 'Let's put some variety in here.'

There would be a school somewhere (haven't decided yet), and people would join, go through classes, and interact with one another. And then, when you least expect it, boom. Big twist, and everyone is involved, and you have to unravel some mysterious big plot. There would be a good variety of classes to support a great variety of characters.

Tell me what you think, and if you like it, then I will add more to it. :)

Thanks to all that reply...
and for those who don't...

A small comment: the only real schools in Tamriel are mage's academies, and the educational system would most certainly be different than what we know today. There are no huge public high schools, most people are either apprentices or have small schoolhouses with as many as two dozen students. So unless you want to make up some lore here and throw modern life into Tes...

Supposing you would want to do such a thing, you have to remember that when RPing children there are some real implications as far as forum rules go. They can't die, there can't be any heavy romance, and generally half the bad things that people do in other RPs aren't allowed to happen.

But since that is just a minor detail, I'll move on to some actually helpful criticism. The idea itself is sound, if not as different as you think. It'll pretty much be the same as other types of RPs depending on the plot, the only change being that it is in a school with teachers and teenagers. So the whole school concept is fine, not much to argue about there; the whole point of the idea thread is to discuss the plot  So I advise you think one up soon, so we actually have something to talk about ;)

Looks like a decent idea though, school has a subtle dynamic overlooked by most advlts. Good luck, I'll try and drop by to discuss every now and again, but I doubt I'll be able to take part in it.

Could be fun. There are some points to work out, but there always are.

I can see the Arcane University as being something similar to what is intended, if I am interpreting correctly (which I may only be partially), but that does limit it mostly to magic-oriented characters. Would make most sense to my own stock, actually, but that made it almost instantly relate to something like Harry Potter (which might turn a lot of people off of it).

There are no huge public high schools, most people are either apprentices or have small schoolhouses with as many as two dozen students.

Correction--there are no huge public schools that we know. Technically, there is a lot of lore that is not built in to the games that could exist, but is not important enough to include (or that there is not time or memory budget to include). Though I find it illogical that there would be some giant academy at every city smart enough to have a wall, a place with a lot of culture (such as any capitol, and especially somewhere like the Imperial City) would be very likely to at least have some sort of archive, at which point you have scholars, possibly large schools, and so on. I guess "public" schools are unlikely, but private schools are, even if just to the rich.

Regardless, if it was executed well, I think that it could be fun. For the sake of RP, most people have a much wider margin of willing suspension of disbelief. Maybe throw in a few plot ideas, and it will be easier to consider.

How 'bout a College?

Vum started one a while back, it was fun but died pretty quickly.

I'd join so I can use my anti-social outcast lizard again :D

Mmmhmm. I would most likely join for the same reason. Hurrah for reusing characters!

I'll pass until I see some story behind it.

And I did one with Redwolf. I was the mysticism teacher. But anyway... Think it would get pretty complex and would need a lot of control over things. IT could also get confusing, What do I know... :P

But it could work.

I've seen this done before. It takes a lot. For the sake of Akatosh don't do another Blades Academy. Way too overdone. Also, I refuse to play in the modern world where Morrowind is apparently decimated. Just saying. That kind of irks me as my favorite characters that I use both have deep roots from Morrowind. Sorry if anyone hates it, but oh well. Anywho, I would do this if it was done correctly.

TC, you still want to do this, I advise you stray as far from Harry Potter as possible. Don't make this some corny fantasy crap.

I'm still not sure. What kind of school are we talking about? Theres alot of assumptions that its going to be a mage school (mages guild perhaps?) but that would completely alienate people wanting to use non-mages :/ Could be something the elder council set up in the absence of an emperor in hopes of finding a bright young mind within the populace to take up the mantle perhaps?

Well, in medieval times, most schools were Abbeys-a collage of the Nine? Other than that, any schools would probably be run by a guild or a group of specialists. But this looks good.

College would seem the most logical, that way we could avoid sacrificing anything.

Indeed! Twenty points to who can guess which one I'd use. :P

In any case, it sounds fun, corny Harry Potter knockoff or not.

In my experience these don't last, So I reccomend finding a way for this to NOT involve people sitting while some random player gives a lecture in character that ranges from BS to awesome insight based on their own personal knowledge and what they found on TIL, only to go to like 5 other classes of the same damn thing.

Well, it seems like this exploded overnight. Wow.

Well, I think I am going to take a night to write out the whole thing, seeing as everyone is demanding a plot. So, uh, I'll close this up, post the new one tomorrow, and we can get to discussion on that. Thanks to all that participated in the heated debate and discussion.

But to those who didn't...
