Recently re-purchased Oblivion, about 24 hours played thus f

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:45 am

Hey Folks,

I just wanted to get experienced Elder Scrolls players opinion on this matter, like I said I have just re-bought the game for my PS3 to play over the holidays and was wondering if I should just pick up where I left off or start a new game. I think I am 23/24 hours in and it maybe redundant to have to re-complete some quests. I last played the game back in March/April of this year so I do have a pretty good memory of some of the quests and wanted to avoid the tedium of going back over those.

Thanks,

rhughes

Unless you want to do Efficient Leveling (if you haven't done it before) and/or want new appearance, just continue the game.

I, myself, would start a new game, just because I like almost all of the quests and would want to play through all of them again, cause they're fun. You could probably just pick up where you left off, I wouldn't though.

It sounds like you are playing rather casually and perhaps just over the holidays or in small spurts. Given that, I think you might be best served by continuing with your current character. I hope you enjoy your time! :)

I imagine a lot depends on why you stopped playing the first time, and whether you want to do things completely differently the next time.

I'd start again, with a character that's completely unlike the first one.

Do you think the games journal and menus will give me enough information where I jump back into my existing save comfortably, help me fill in enough blank and get me up to speed from when I last played the game?

Yes, just use the quest log. Pick something you are interested in doing and click on it to make it the active quest. Waypoints on your map will show you who to talk to or where to go in case you have no idea what you were working on. And really, its more fun to play these games just doing whatever you want whenever you want.

Personally I would start a new character as well. In my opinion no one character suits playing all the quest lines, because it just doesn't make sense to let an assassin go through the mage guild and become arch-mage, same for a warrior. My mage will never do the fighters guild questline, although she may master illusion and become an assassin, and even beat the arena just to show everyone that magic practitioners dominate all else.

The 3 main types of character (combat, magic, stealth) should all be played at least once, in my opinion. Unlike some other games, I think all different types are equally interesting in Oblivion. Warriors have two big quest lines apart from the MQ, have a nice combat system and can get some awesome armor and weaponry. Mages have a truly diverse set of spells that can make them excell in almost any area. Stealth characters can get virtually anywhere and do awesome damage in a short amount of time. There's just too much to do to stick with one character!

...And how long it has been since you played. I agree with ghastley though, if it were me I would start a new game and reimmerse yourself.

It's your own judgment to make, I'd say, though usually, if I'm replaying a game I had not played for a long time, I'll start over from the beginning, but if I had only left it for a short time, I might continue the same save, so if I were to give my own opinion, it would partially depend on how long it's been since you've played the game. It also depends on whether you were happy with your original character or if you want to try something new. Starting a new character would be a good way to try a different character from what you played before, but if you still want to go with the same character, then I'd say you shouldn't do so.

I'm a notorious re-starter, so I say restart! Just kidding.

The only reason I say that is because hindsight is 20/20, especially in oblivion.

If you're enjoying the playthrough is really what matters. So if your having fun with your character, stick with it. If not, create a new one and take what you learned and apply to your new character. It is a win / win either way. :)
