Fallout 3 is a rather different game. It's got more exploration base in it, and I find the game to be superior to NV in most ways.
Personally I hate NV and Love FO3 so, your choice.

If New Vegas is you're first Fallout game then Fallout 3 might not offend you too much, good game to play, big wasteland, but still [censored] IMO.

Yes definetely try out Fallout 3, you might even find that you like it better than New Vegas (like myself) but they are both very good games and they just cater to different styles of playing. New Vegas is more for you if you like a more quest/storyline oriented game while Fallout 3 is more for exploration/atmosphere and free-reign styles of play.

and it would not be a "big step backward" or anything for sure. I switch between them right now.

No, it wouldn't be a step backward at all, just a walk in a different direction.

Im about 20hours deep in NV, and I like a little better, just cause there are so many options, quest wise. But Fallout 3 is still a really fun, deep, and solid game. The 2 games are just different. Fallout 3 is really bleak, depressing, and more combat oriented than NV. Plus your constantly searching for supplies and ammo in FO3. One isn't necessarily better than the other, just different experiences.

It won't be a step back word, like cheech98 said. I love Fallout 3 and I think it is better just because I played it so much, love the metros, and ruined city. Plus Fallout 3 and New Vegas aren't related at all, I'm pretty sure, I haven't played New Vegas too its full extend so I'm not sure if anything in Fallout 3 is ever mentioned. Fallout 3 also has some cool DLCs.

Just my opinion though, but if you do get Fallout 3 I'm sure you will love it.

Fallout 3 feels a lot more like Fallout. As in problems after problems; not story wise. Exploration is much better, and the story is a lot more touching. It involves the great journey for clean water. :cryvaultboy:

As a person who played entire series, I say go ahead and give it a try. I hate the game to no end, but that doesn't mean that you would. In fact I would recommend giving the whole series a try to better get a perspective of "What is Fallout?". You can often find the originals in little collections in Best Buys for $20. Also, you can find Fallout 3 just about anywhere in a Game of the Year Edition format with the Broken Steel, Mothership Zeta, Operation Anchorage, and The Pitt (Which I actually like...) add-ons (One warning about the Game of the Year Edition is that it is horribly buggy and you have to get it patched... don't ask me how. Oh and Fallout 3 does something funky with quad-core processors that the game continualy crashes, but don't ask me how to fix that too, these guys hear know how to fix issues like that.).

fo3's theme is mostly concentrated on exploration and a huge map to roam around,if there's one thing i could assure you when playing fo3, i did not get bored, or came to a point where its not interesting anymore. so the length of game play and the repetition factor of fo3 is one of the best. especially if you have the GOTY edition.

You might enjoy it but if you like Damage Theshold, reputation system, iron sites, hardcoe mode you will not find that with FO3. FO3 also has level scaling everywhere, so no matter where you go every enemy will be equal to or less then your skill. I say try the originals first then FO3.

IMHO New Vegas has a better story. It also has more quests then FO3, more dialogue/better dialogue. Its more advlt then FO3.

I never got a fishy stick! Oh well, I'm still new so it doesn't matter. On topic: If you haven't been spoiled by being able to make concoctions, use iron sights, buy mods for your guns, and use bullet types then yes. Most definetly yes. (if you can't live without those things, there are mods for them I'm sure)

Oh, and hardcoe mode. But if you are playing on PC then you can mod those in or get other mods that do just that.
