2 Weird Glitches

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:48 am

Ok I have already posted this in the MGE thread, but I'll put it here anyway. My first glitch is that when I try to launch Morrowind with MGE installed I get an error message saying "Error: MGE is not configured. Please run MGEgui to configure it before launching Morrowind." I can run Morrowind, but I have to remove the d3d8.dll and dinput8.dll files to disable MGE. My second glitch is that no grass shows up from my Vurt's groundcover mod and Ascadian Isles/Sheogorad grass mods. I think this glitch is related to the first because I think these mods are dependant on MGE. If anybody could help me I really appreciate it. I am running Windows Vista with an x64 processor. I also have the steam version of the game, but I disabled the in game community.

right click your morrowind launcher.exe, click run as administrator, click options, set any resolution, click ok. and close the morrowind launcher.

Replace the d3d8 and dinput.dlls back into your morrowind folder.

Rightclick your MGEgui.exe, click run as administrator, set your graphics resolution, AA, AF ect, then click the tools tab, click distant land file creation wizard.

Make sure that any esm/esp that you want to have their statics displayed are checked before continuing with the distant land file creation, including the grass esp.

Create your distant textures(1024/512 is plenty even for a 1080p screen and will keep the performance hit down), create your distantland meshes, before creating statics, make sure they are set how you want, I personally would set near static size to 200 or less(150 is a good medium, 0 will have a large performance hit), far size to between 300 and 500 and very far to between 650 and 900, also make sure you have your distant land rendering range set ect, now when all of that is said and done, create your statics, this step will take a while, so just let it run, could be just a minute, and it could take 10 minutes depending on your rig and how many mods its going through. After that is done, try running morrowind again, if it doesn't work, set properties for both MGE and Morrowind by right clicking the .exe's again and changing them to always run as administrator, and then try again.

Didn't work. I still get the same error message.

Also on a side note, your instructions for MGE seem to be out of date or something. A lot of the settings you're telling me to change during distant land creation aren't there. And the distant land creation wizard is in its own tab, not under tools.

Nope, its not my instructions, but your version of MGE, which I'm going to assume, is 3.8.0b based on on the fact that DLCW is in its own tab.

Ok, well aside from that, I still cannot launch Morrowind with MGE installed.

Have you redated your morrowind.esm, tribunal.esm and bloodmoon.esm's back to 2002?(didn't pay attention to the fact that you had the steam copy before, oops)

If not, then MGE won't work, but you can use Wrye mash, just use search for "wrye mash standalone" here on the forums and you should get a link, and you can redate the esm files that way, which, hopefully, is the only problem that you have on your end yet to solve.

Also, you may have to redo your distant land creation after redating the files, since MGE bases what it renders on the esm/esp file dates.

Yes I have the standalone and I had already redated them to 2002.

Ok, I installed the beta version and everything is running pretty good now. However I have 2 more problems:

-My view distance is miniscule. I used your recommended numbers and I can barely see the entire Seyda Neen.
-Vurt's groundcover and the AC/S grass still are not working. Am I supposed to check the .ESP's in the launcher?

Those recommended numbers were for static sizes, not for distances, for distances, I would have them set 2 for near, 3-4 for far, and 4-6 for very far depending on how far you wish to see statics.

Make sure in the Distant Land tab that Use distant land(upper left corner) is checked.

Also, make sure that Use distant statics is checked, I'd also recommend using at least lanscape and near static reflections(I use all of these checks accept blur reflections). Grass needs to be checked when you create distant land, it needs to be unchecked before playing morrowind though.

The esm dates aren't where the problem lies, it has to do with the bsa archive dates and the default Morrowind.ini setting 'TryArchiveFirst=0'. If the bsa archives are not redated, then custom mod assets (e.g. meshes, textures) will end up getting overridden by the default assets. A peculiar side effect is also for MGE to refuse to render distantland. Since the bsa files need to be redated, another app besides Wrye Mash is required.

See the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1150836-morrowind-graphics-extender-mge/ for details regarding Steam and MGE compatibility (link to a freeware redating app is provided there).

My apologies for the misinformation, I don't actually use the Steam version of the game, but for some reason I thought it had to do with the .esm. I'm very sorry for the headache that poor information may have caused. :(

Ok so if I use your re-dating app to re-date the .bsa's you think this will solve the problem?

Return to III - Morrowind
