The Five Weapon Backpack Rule

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:47 am

Give me a Scoped .44 Magnum, and I'm good for a large part of the game.
Using other guns is fun, but I'm usually using the magnum, or a variation of it (Paulson's Revolver, the magnum from blowing up the citadel, etc.)

After playing Fallout a couple of times through I realized that carrying around 10 weapons was really unrealistic and thats when I started using the realism factor. It makes the game SO much better, or it does so in my opinion.

My Setup

Backpack: None, I dislike Big Guns.
Rifle 1: Ol' Painless
Rifle 2: The Terrible Shotgun
Holster 1: Stab Happy
Holster 2: Dart Gun

I also bring some grenades with me just incase.

I cannot wait for hardcoe mode or whatever they named it in F:NV.

Rifle1: AK-47
Rifle2: Dragnov Semi Scoped:
Holster1: Berreta M92
Holster2: Combat Knife

Now mix this with a 4x damage multiplier and MMM increased spawns and you get some hardcoe moments

My current loadout is this:

A3-21's Plasma Rifle
Gatling Laser
Gauss Rifle
Alien Disintegrator.

Really all you need, I could easily drop either the Plasma Rifle or the Disintegrator as well, to meet the backpack rule. The Gauss Rifle is just too useful for CCing Albino Radscorpions, Ghoul Reavers and Mutant Overlords to part with though. :P

@Zuufff-Naaah, your first time through you just want to go nuts and have a great time with everything. No need to arbitrarily restrict yourself; I find that making up your own rules for a playthrough tends to be more fun after beating the game. So yeah, I'd say just go nuts your first time through!

Having beat the game once, I decided to play a more realism based character this go around. My loadout (so far, as this new character is very low level right now) is a Hunting Rifle, a Chinese Assault Rifle, a Silenced 10mm Pistol, and a SO Shotgun. He is also carrying some grenades and mines. The RP aspect of this new character will keep that loadout very similar, just with better weapons. This character is somewhat anti-technology, because he feels that technology got the world where it is. As a result, he will only use gunpowder based weapons. No energy weapons or big guns. He will have one rifle for long range sniping, one assault rifle, one shotgun for close encounters, and the most powerful pistol he can lay his hands on. Homemade weapons are ok too, as they are decidedly low-tech. Preferably a dart gun. So that's the 5 weapons plus explosives.

Possibly not. The hunting rifle is actually a standby for many seasoned players, the double barrel shotgun comers from one of the DLC's, combat knife is a decent backup and he may be doing a little roleplaying, and the chinese assault rifle is the best assault rifle besides it's unique equivalent, and the . 32 cal pistol is probably so he can share ammo with the hunting rifle.

Hunting rifles are nice, benefit is that they are good for long range shootouts but usable on short range against raiders and weaker enemies. The two other long range small guns is the unique Lincolns repeater and who has little ammo and the sniper rifle who is useless on short range and is hard to repair and has limited ammo. O'painless is an unique hunting rifle with 0 spread and use the same common ammo and is nice. Yes the pit makes hunting rifles pretty obsolete as you can make .45 for Lincolns repeater who much harder and shoot faster.

I acutely only use a few weapons, last time I played my endgame setup was Lincolns repeater for long range, vengeance against tough enemies close up and the plasma rifie from the android or the ultra smg against weaker enemies at close range.

Find myself in serious problems at level 24 in vault 84 and run into groups of super mutant overlords, I only has the unique Chinese assault rifle and was Lincolns repeater and they are not good enough for killing them. Thinking about finding vengeance as it worked very nice on the sentry bots who was the toughest enemy in the original game.

Is where other harder hitting weapons in the game of the year edition? all the gun skills are over 90, has tested the three beam lasers, they are nice but has to short range.

To be honest I go in with just a hunting rifle, 32 calibre pistol, combat knife, Jericho, and make it up as I go along, One time I was a sniper, another time I found a rocket launcher. Fun times

1: Xuanlong
2: Lincoln's Repeater (Ol'Painless before there is a large stockpile of .44 Ammo)
3: Combat Shotgun
4: Laser Pistol
5: 4x Frag Grenades

Those five weapons and the game will still be fairly easy. If you really want a challenge use HALO rules and carry only two weapons+grenades.....Maybe disallow Lincoln's Repeater as it is one of the game's "I Win" buttons.

I remember way back when, someone had a pack-brahmin mod.

If some of the NPC companions weren't so gungho or stupid, it would be nice to have them as your faithfull gunbearer:

"Yo! Butch! Pass me my faithfull Guass Rifle and load up the LR....there's some killin' about to happen."

Short melee range (and ammo saver), Shiskabob.
Short range firepower, Terrible shotgun.
Mid/long range, XAR &/or Lincoln's repeater.
A couple of each grenade/mine types.

And that's it for weapons. On occasion, I bring Blackhawk along for entertainment.

Having read these posts (and being my second playthrough), I may try the "limiting" restrictions, such as carrying only what a regular person would have if they had survived and hidden out.

For example, finish the vault 101 stuff...go and sell everything, buying a dirty pre-war suit, a .32 pistol (with 2 or 3 reloads), a couple of stimpacks, several radiation drugs. Then , I'd go and live with the ex-prosttute in Springville. YEA.

Dart Gun
Gauss Rifle
Jack
Calahan's Magnum

Play in God mode and these will do it for the game, start to finish. Possibly some bottlecap mines and nuka grenades would top it off.
Dart Gun goes incredibly well with Chinese Stealth Armor.

That's actually a really good idea, I like the whole concept behind it. What I think is ironic about my liking the idea so much is how many weapons I usually carry ( Tesla cannon, Precision Gattling Laser, Minigun, Fast-Torch Flamer, Fatman, Combat Shotgun, Chinese Assault Rifle, Shiskebab, Jingweis Shock Sword, assorted grenades, Tri-beam laser rifle and, occasionally plasma rifle or alien disentagrator)

In the GOTY edition I would say the Tesla Cannon would probably be the best
