The little things

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:06 am

I love finding little things in movies, books and games that I might have been into for ages but still find new things in.

I'm a biologystudent at a Swedish university. early last month we were supposed to extract hemoglobin (The oxygen-carrying protein in red bloodcells). It was all fun an interesting, though a while after I restarted Oblivion after a few months of not having played it. When one of those infoboxes in loadscreens came up I noticed that vampirism is known as Porphyric Hemophilia. I had read the name of it before and knew about hemoglobin and what it does long before starting uni, but it had never crossed my mind before that hemophilia is loosely translated to "Bloodlover".

Just felt like charing this little story with you. I thought it was fun to notice that they put effort into the name.

Another useless fact: According to Wikipedia the sixual attraction to blood is sometimes known as vampirism.

The night sky, butterflies, waterfalls, the behavior of deer. . . loads of little yummies in the game.

Me and a friend were kidding around a few days ago. It somehow ended in us saying all Chemist (Of wich we know a few) are vampires =P

And yeah, I love the behaivour of deer in the game, I hope they exapand on that in Skyrim.

Another thing I noticed thats more of a nitpick is that "See life"-spells are more of a "See large animals"-spells, as the whole game would glow if it actually made all life on screen glow.

Maybe the deer in Skyrim will shiver and fall down frozen. :cold: Or perhaps look more like caribou?

Coming up with a precise but very short name for some effects is very tough. Detect life doesn't pick up trees or butterflies, but it has to cover everything from bears to skeletons to mudcrabs. 'Make bigger things that can move glow pink' is rather long for a magic effect discription, lol.

Same with 'soul trap' that works even on an undead soulless summon. Perhaps 'pink glow grabber'? Double lol.

Same with 'silence'. My character doesn't make a peep to cast a spell anyway and can talk just fine under a silence effect. 'Prevents spellcasting except for greater/lesser/special powers'?

Deer does just fine in Scandinavian temperatures, so I'd guess Skyrim wouldn't have a whole lot of frozen deers in it

And yeah, it's just silly things to think about. "Detect life" does sound short and easy, as does soul trap.

Oh, that's good to know about the deer! I guess I should have realized that. I know they do well up in northern Maine, USA.

Yes, just fun silly things about some of the spell names. :)

Right, porphyria is a metabolism disease.

Hemo - Blood
Philia - Love

That's a great thing about Bethesda, it's not just programming the games. They seem to have a diverse number of people on staff that can think up all this lore stuff.

For example, Mannimarco is believed to be derived from Marco Manni who was the rule of Worms Germany. Get it? Mannimarco is also known as the King of Worms.

etc.

Also, there are going to be Elk in Skyrim! I hope they are similar to Deer in Oblivion.

Perhaps 'pink glow grabber'?

I normally try to name spells in keeping with the game, and my roleplay but .....

now my current character Lisirra, --who is about to gain access to the Arcane University-- is going to have a Soul Trap spell for filling her soul gems named Pink Glow Grabber!

 :celebration:

Heh. Buffy is a very long range mystic archer. She sees her enemies as distant pink glows and relies on the fade of the glow and the song of Azura's Star for notification that her poisoned arrow has done it's job. :twirl:
