Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:23 am

I came across these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aycv6oDI12I&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvftRFhtXGM&feature=watch_response on Youtube by Vality7. Does anyone know the status of this mod, wheather it will be released at all, or if it has been?

Won't be released, for the obvious reasons.

The meshes and landscaping were imported from Oblivion; therefore the mod can't be released, as already suggested by Pluto.

Bethesda has stated very clearly, many times over the years.... NO.

The no part has been very clear, but has it ever been explained as to why? They hold copyright to both games, the models are allowed nearly free use within the games themselves, yet you cant cross models between games?

I think it was because different people made the models for the different games, including third-party game designers not working directly within Bethesda.
I seem to recall hearing this before.... but I could be wrong.

I'm sure there are other legal issues at work, too.

It is possible to release a mod to use Oblivion resources in Morrowind, for users who have both games:

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7245
"A set of MS-DOS batch files to replace some of Morrowind's sound effect with sound effects from Oblivion."

It's because some of the resources have been licensed from different sources for both games.

That mod requires that you have both games and doesn't contain resources from either game, which is why Vality's mod was never released. If he didn't release the Oblivion resources necessary to play his mod, then it could be released.

I posted the same question over at Great House Fliggerty about two days ago, Gnomesrule19. You probably shouldn't bring it up on here since it's the official forums. But a fan site like GHF is out of Bethesda's control so we can discuss it over there legally, I think.

I am sure discussing why we cant do something is perfectly fine seeing as how the mods have not locked this thread.

On the topic at hand, I suppose if they used 3rd party modeling, the license to use said models would probably only extend to the game they were to be used for. Although this brings up the interesting point that perhaps if you knew a bit about legal workings, a new agreement of sorts could be reached for say a single person only(contacting the original modeler, the company etc). This would however be unlikely given the probable complexity of something like that.

you can always make your own new models from scratch if you have the skill. then you wouldn't be breaking anything. you could make and release a mod set in the shivering isles as long as you didn't use anything from oblivion. all new npc's and quests geared toward a likely reaction to your character who is more associated with azura would be cool.
