Black Smithing?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:45 pm

I heard someone say something about forging your own weapons. I thought that would be pretty cool. But I would also like it if you could either mine the material needed for creating weapons, or buy it from a store. And why be limited to only weapons? How about forging armor as well? There could be a new Black Smithing skill, which would also merge with the repair skill. What do you think?

That's racist.

Anyway, the GI article mentions mining so that's in.

Would be awesome to make your own weapons and armor from resources you've collected on your travels. And cheaper then buying them at a store, plus you could then sell anything you've made but don't intend to keep.

I would love the radiant AI to recognize you are a blacksmith and when you make a lot of stuff a quest could be for you to make weapons... would be cool.

Well, there's a new skill called smithing. Could just be a rename of armorer, or something more perhaps.

Am I only one who chuckled when GI described it as "carving" weapons out of hot metal? It's called forging. I would also accept "smelting."

I would like it a lot.

For some reason, I'm thinking of Way of the Samurai 3. I really liked how the weapon felt like yours in that game.

I'm not sure if that system would fit with TES, but I want that feeling.

Getting your own raw materials in the game, and crafting the weapon yourself would be really cool. I didn't really like how on Morrowind and Oblivion, you just collected the materials and then someone crafted the armor for you.

I also would really like to be able to have some way to affect the weapon's appearance.

I'm looking forward to blacksmithing. I believe enchanting and smithing would be 2 skills that should mesh nicely. I hope it is done like Ultima or even like LOTR.

I kinda thought it might mean you can carve your own bows as well. Maybe I'm hoping for too much.

Well there was a Dunmer smith in Oblivion, so I don't think there are any colour restrictions on the job.

I love the idea of smithing. I look forward to forging my own sword out of some rare ore that I found deep within the earth, and using it to slay dragons. I will be making a super stereotypical "Blacksmiths son" character at some point.

There's a picture in the GI article that shows some of the skills, and Smithing is one of them. In the "Road to Skyrim" video, they show a potential menu on their whiteboard for their crafting system.

http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/551/screenshot20110118at104.png a screenshot of that section of the whiteboard.

I LUUUUUV enchanting things. I'll definately be ecstatic if I can also make the things that I'll enchant  . And if at a high enough skill level those things are better than anything in any shop or random loot... rock on!

Well, bows would be carved from wood, not hot metal as GI described it. Although ES always seems to have trouble coming up with bow materials, like "Silver bow/steel bow." I think in OB though, at least for the silver, it seemed to be describing the fittings rather than the bow stave itself. But I agree that it would be a shame if there was a restriction on the type of weapons you can make.

Since when is a bow not a weapon? You'll be able to make that, too.

I personally own an aluminium bow with a cast riser and fiber limbs, so I don't see why it shouldn't be possible in silver (although not practical). I own a wooden bow too, which I like better cause it's a one piece whereas the aluminium is a take-down. So making bows from metal is certainly possible.

i think forging items, black-smithing, and mining are all confirmed.

the smithing skill might govern 3 activities.

GI mentions alchemy and forging and carving along with farming, mining, woodcutting and cooking.
Also the game informer shot of the skills menu shows a skill cutoff on the right of the screen as "SMIT..."

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume smithing is a skill, which probably encompases repairs for metal weapons/armour.

If you want to be bold I guess you could hope for skills that allow you to "carve" bows, and posibly a bunch of other stuff.

I'm personally hopping for being able to edit the weapons appearence, by smashing the blade into a unique shape and scrapping in a pattern with a knife...
