(Req)700 Nitro express, Double Barrel

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:36 pm

Basically I've been getting into making my own custom loads, and I noticed in my load chart the 700 nitro express load. I had never heard of such an ungodly load, and it's kinetic energy is tremendous. I forget how hard it hits for sure, but I believe it is at least 16000 lbs/in2. So I looked it up and it was indeed the world's hardest hitting load. Unfortunately it was only good for 100 yards. So I thought this would be great for taking out all the big game in Fallout. Basically it is a one shot kill, but with the slow reload time, and lets not forget the rarity of the ammo, it should balance well in game. It cost $340 + for a box of 5...Just the brass casings. Don't get me started on the pure brass bullet. Any way, just thought this would be a great gun. Here some pics.

You should make it so that if the player doesn't have a good Small Guns skill (70+) they can't deal with the recoil and they get knocked down, maybe crippling their arm.

i was expecting to see the double barrel gun from that one tremors movie, i think that was an elephant gun, what i'm wondering about is that ammo in the pic is that bigger then a .50 cal round? it looks like one mean chunk of metal.

I think that is simultaneously the most beautiful and ugly weapon I have ever seen.
A wall ornament for the ridiculously rich, more than a practical weapon.
I would love to have a go at shooting the thing though!

A good choice for my next SM behemoth safari perhaps
It seems to be single barrel though.

Yes, it is much larger than a .50 Caliber round. A .50 Caliber is only 1/2" wide. Whereas the 700 Nitro Express is .70 Caliber, or 7/10" wide. If you have trouble with fractions, it's basically almost 3/4 of an inch. It is definetly a whole lot of brass coming at you.

Yes I agree it's defineatly a single barrel.

It is a single barrel in the picture, which I chose for it's detailed pictures, I figure that would give a modder the most to go off of. They actually make this firearm in a bolt-action as well, I figured that would make it too overpowered.

Edit:
And it appears the one that is already made is indeed a bolt action. And that he has it accurate for more than 100 yards looking that Donut boy. The shear size, weight, and shape of the bullet keeps it from traveling that far. It is not aerodynamic. Quite the opposite, the made it to be a massive blunt force trauma projectile.

Found an interersting survey of big bore hunting rounds over here http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.470mbogo.com/BigBoreCompendium/02.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.470mbogo.com/BigBoreCompendium/&usg=__JVTEczidpDVcl5ndTRvn6-eu1Jo=&h=316&w=550&sz=100&hl=en&start=9&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=csTGw1PpGHX-mM:&tbnh=76&tbnw=133&prev=/images%3Fq%3D700%2Bnitro%2Bexpress%2Bload%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-US%26rlz%3D1I7GGLL_en%26tbs%3Disch:1
It notes the following:

A 700 Nitro Express was taken on a recent elephant hunt in Botswana with Safaris Botswana Bound (saf.bots@info.bw), and the following report was provided by Graeme Pollock.

"The gun was too heavy for the hunter to walk the long distances sometimes required in Elephant hunting…. The first shot on the Elephant was a frontal shot which did not hit the brain and did not knock the Elephant down. The shot was apparently high due to a hang fire. The second shot was lung heart and the elephant again did not go straight down but it did not move much either before going down. The 1000g bullet seems to have not much more noticeable knockdown power than the 500 or 470 NE 500g round."

Similarly, professional hunter Mark Sullivan who has hunted with a 16 pound Watson Brother's 700 Nitro Express, finds it a bit too heavy to get onto charging buffalo as quickly as he would like. When considering the cost of a rifle in 700 Nitro Express, the weight and difficulty of carrying one, and the savage recoil, the performance on game is rather disappointing.

You said it!
And a box of 5 rounds will set you back over $250 (but damn impressive rounds they are!)
Get yourself a $20,000+ rifle to shoot em out of and off you go to bag an elephant!

Either that, or you can do like the poachers do, and just unload a mag or two of 7.62x39 out of your old, rusty 50 buck Kalashnikov into poor jumbo...

The Interesting thing about hunting Elephants is the fact of shot placement. The elephant's hide is so tough that the only spot you will really achieve any true penetration is the area behind the Elephants ear and Jaw line. Shooting at a Charging Elephant is ridiculous, because you are aiming right for the Strongest bones and the toughest skin. Knowing this, I can tell that this report was made by inexperienced elephant hunters. If they were going for a frontal shot, an Armor Piercing round would of been much more effective.

at 16 pounds i think the hunter would have better luck leaving the ammo at home and just using the darn thing as a club and beat the elephant to death.

I always heard that when an elephant starts to charge you're supposed lower your head and chare it right back, ir really confuses the hell out of them!

Some of those guns are around $75,000, and the cheapest one I found was 18,000. I cried when I got a loan for my pickup, so using one of the guns as a club would be insane.

It is the only known time you can actually get an Elephant to forget something.
