UPDATE-

I have changed bUseThreadedAI=0 to bUseThreadedAI=1 and added the line iNumHWThreads=2 after.

No change. Still crashes at start.

I will wait one more day for replies here. If I receive none, I will be returning this game for a refund. This is ridiculous and not at all acceptable.

Actually, I'm taking this game back this evening. I paid for this game to work. There is no reason by any stretch of the imagination why I should be working to get this game to work.

I would say thank you to all that have helped. But, no one has...

No one has responded on the forum for the game run by the company that sells the game...

What a joke.

I have just returned from WalMart where I was informed I could only exchange it for the same thing. Awesome.

Now, I have just sent a message to gamesas requesting a fix or a refund.

I am very upset at all of this. I purchased a game based on the minimum requirements printed on the box and it doesn't work.

I have received a timely response from gamesas tech support. They have suggested running in an older version of Windows.

I have just tried-

Windows XP Service Pack 2-CRASH
Windows XP Service Pack 3-CRASH
Windows Vista-Crash
Windows Vista Service Pack 2-CRASH

Also, the Windows troubleshooting tool says the game is just plain old incompatible. Microsoft doesn't have Fallout 3 listed as a supported program.

I just received this from Bethesda's tech support-

"Since we do not support this game on Windows 7 you will have to try and get the game to work on your own. Thank you."

Gee :icecream: That sure is awesome.

I responded with some such this and that and asked how I can get a refund. I am awaiting their answer.

I wonder if they have paid attention to my info that I included and realize what radio market I live in. Because, no matter how this turns out, this is all getting forwarded to Clark Howard and Maximum PC. I am so perturbed right now it isn't even funny.

This is getting a bit fun. This is what I just received-

"The game is not supported on Windows 7 and that is official sir. If you would like to get it to run on that system you will need to research the issue on your own. Thank you."

They ignored my question about how to get a refund. So, I sent another message asking again.

If they say there will be no refund, I will be posting all the e-mails from me to them and from them to me, here, on [censored], another chan or two, and on the Fallout3 Facebook page. I will also be forwarding all the e-mails to Clark Howard on am750/95.5FM in Atlant, GA and to Maximum PC.

I may never see my money. I may never get to play this game. But, Bethesda Softworks will lose business. Much more than the value of this game.

I just received a message quoting gamesas's return policy and retailer return policy, etc...

I just informed them that I would be contacting ZeniMax Media INC, WalMart, and ultimately Clark Howard and Maximum PC.

I am rather bored lately and have the spare time. So, let's see how far I have to go to get past customer no service and speak to someone that can fix this.

I had the same problem as you when the game first came out but that turned out to be a graphics driver problem.

Updating to the current version at that time solved the black screen issue for me. I had Nvidia GTX 260 then and now have GTX 470, Game runs fine on both cards,

Try changing the 'Screen Effects' option to 'None'' if it is set to 'HDR' and 'Vertical Sync' to 'Off' and see if that fixes it. I recall having had to do that in the past.

Both Fallout games run perfectly well for me on Win 7 64bit.

Thank you Graham. I have tried numerous settings. Turned everything off. Etc...

Here's the deal...Why are we having to jump through hoops to play a game that we paid good money for that is advertised as getting better performance on more powerful systems? Read the "System Requirements" on the back of the box. Then read the sentence below that. This game is explicitly and implicitly advertised as being able to perform on PCs that meet or exceed the "System Requirements". Nowhere on the box does it exclude Windows 7 as a supported OS. How long has Windows 7 been out? How long has Fallout 3 been on the shelves? All it would take is a small amount of effort to add the line "DOES NOT WORK ON MACHINES USING WINDOWS 7". Also, they could add "gamesas DOES NOT SUPPORT FALLOUT 3 IN WINDOWS 7". Because, that is what gamesas tech support is trying to pawn off on me.

The package says one thing(WHAT I BASED MY PURCHASE ON), the reality is completely different(I WOULD HAVE NEVER CONSIDERED PURCHASING THIS GAME IF THE PACKAGING WAS ACCURATE).

And, It appears that the packaging has been misleading or downright fraudulent for YEARS.

gamesas has placed the responsibility of making this game work on me, the customer. I bought the game based on their labeling, which is an outright lie or at the very least misleading. The existence of thread after thread on this forum, THEIR forum, on THEIR website, about this issue is ample evidence that-

1- A problem exists. (The game doesn't work as advertised)
2- The problem is easily remedied. (Mark the packages accurately)
3- Them not remedying the problem is profitable to them. (How many games have they sold to people that would never purchase if the package was accurate?)
4- The problem equals them behaving in a misleading or criminal manner on what I imagine is at least a nationwide scale and probably a world wide scale.
5- Their willful neglect to accurately label their product leads them to gaining a sum of money and the customer receiving an unusable and worthless bundle of plastic.

I imagine that I may receive a refund after a period of days or weeks of sending off messages to EVERYONE involved in this(gamesas, ZeniMax Media, WalMart) But, I don't particularly care.

What is going to be interesting is if someone notices this and realizes that a class action lawsuit is in order. Multiple business are falsely advertising one or more products and profiting in numerous states and they all know about it.

All I want is this game to do what is says or my money back. Instead, I am being told to pound sand. Well...I have already lost my $29.95 But, I don't have to slay down and take it.

I have not received a response from ZeniMax Media INC. When sending them a message, they say they should respond in 48 hours. It has been almost 4 days.

I will wait until Monday. If I receive no response by then, I will go back to WalMart and ask to see the store manager. If I get the same run around, I will contact WalMart's main office in Arkansas. If that gets me nowhere, I am going to make a YouTube video detailing all of this and forward that and the e-mails to Clark Howard and see what happens.

I understand that I may seem like a jerk, childish, rude, etc...But, I bought a game based on the requirements printed on the game. I just want the game to work as advertised. Or, I want my money back. I feel like I have been robbed. And, this forum and all the similar threads shows that gamesas has known for a long time that their product doesn't work. It should be relabeled, taken off the shelves, or supported.

I have received no response from ZeniMax. I have received no further responses from gamesas...

I am currently watching THX1138 and am contemplating how far to go with this...

My mother passed away on January 26th of this year. I cared for her for 3+ years as kidney failure took her slowly. I am just now getting over the flu. I have a lot of desires that I would like to pursue and wish that this petty thing would just go away. But, as I watch Robert Duvall being "conditioned" with cattle prods or whatever, I am ever emboldened to fight the system. The system in this case are multiple large corporations that have put a product on the shelves that says it does a thing when it doesn't. When they are asked to remedy the issue, they pass responsibility to each other or on to the consumer...

I ask you, any that may read this thread, am I crazy? Am I wrong for being upset that I bought an unusable product? Am I wrong for wanting to hold them all accountable?

I think I am rightfully upset. But, I think I am putting too much in to this. But, I also think this type of thing should be done from time to time. I think the little man should stick it to the big man every once in a while...

Am I crazy?

I appreciate your input. But, backing up, reformatting, and reinstalling my operating system to play a $29.99 game? I think not.

If you are willing to go to such lengths and find it acceptable to do so, fine, and more power to you. But, under no circumstances should it be necessary for me to wipe out my hard drive to play this game. And, if gamesas thinks this is normal and acceptable, something is seriously wrong.

I don't have state secrets on my computer. But, I am not risking my data because a developer isn't supporting its product.

I think I might be crazy. I am thinking less and less about letting Clark Howard and MaximumPC know about this and more and more about letting my chan brethren have a go at it.

Dear users of the gamesas forums and employees of gamesas...

Please, give me some input. Please, help me. I do not wish to be an irate individual.

I just wanted to play a game to pass the time.

Any that have any input, please talk to me.

A few shots in the dark that have worked for some in the past....

Check all of your drivers for everything. Sound, motherboard etc. etc.

Check your codecs. I think K-Lite works, but don't quote me on it. Look into the forums for more information about that.

Try starting the game in 600x800.

There's a good bit of tweak guides out there. Try some of the .ini tweaks if you haven't already.

And something that I've never seen suggested and have no reports of it working. AVG released a product called 'PC Tuneup'. They offer a 'trial' version of it. It's basically the full version for a limited time. They call it a 'one time fix' or some-such. I ran it on my system and noticed a fair performance increase on all of my games. http://www.avg.com/us-en/download.prd-tripct

Still waiting for someone from Bethesda to respond.

I paid good money for this game. This is the third product I purchased under the Fallout name.

I expect answers and will not settle for silence.

Help me or I will cost you money.

And, you can go ahead and write me off as a disgruntled idiot if you want. But, it will be at your peril.

Bethesda Softworks has a faulty product on the shelves and is doing little to nothing to remedy it.

FIX THIS GAME OR GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK.

And, I dare you to lock this thread. I DARE YOU.

PS-When I say "I will cost you", I mean your lack of effort to support your game for the predominant operating system that came out within the year of this game's release which is still the predominant system at this time when your game is still on the shelves, will cost you.

AND, the cost is completely up to you.

I have already posted this on other forums. I have posted it on one board of one chan. It has already cost you money. It will only get bigger as you ignore this issue.

gamesas has profited in the millions on a faulty game. gamesas will now fix that game or lose in the millions.

And, Obsidian and ZeniMax are next.

I have still not received any response from ZeniMax. Says a lot about a company when they don't respond.

ZeniMax is next. You have been warned and you have done nothing. Prepare yourselves.
