Oblivion's Cliffracer

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:44 am

Arguably, Morrowind's most annoying, yet easily recognised monster was the Cliffracer. Thankfully they weren't ported into Oblivion, meaning next-gen TESers weren't subjected to the 'waaark' of doom, followed by clunky animations, dogged pursuit and probable disease. But is there a creature in Oblivion who rivals the Cliffracer for sheer player irritation? Does Oblivion have it's equivalent?

Personally, my own private Cliffracer is the Mountain Lion... It doesn't matter what you do, it will chase you down. They're faster than you, they don't miss, they're often stronger than you. In early level, meeting one is a death sentence. They're annoying in just about every way. The final insult? The pelt is barely profitable in comparison to its weight. As you can probably guess, I really don't like them. :P

So, what is your personal most hated creature? 'Bosmer' doesn't count. :D

Ogres. [censored] ton of health, and do a lot of damage. The fact that they litter the outer area of Pale pass makes them even worse.

Gah, I have mountain lions. At all levels they're faster than than me, at lows levels they kill me, and at high levels they're just plain annoying.

Agreed, coupled with the lag that my game has, its a nigh on impossible fight

Trolls, not because they are overly hard, but at low levels groups of them have owned me. they always seem to stagger me (even at higher levels) when they attack. And there is something rather chilling in the noise they make, almost reminds me of the noise the people/aliens make in Invasion of the body snatchers for some reason.

If you include human targets then any spell caster, I end up running for what seems hours while they continually pelt me with spells then run, not allowing me to close the distance to chop them into suet.

Mountain Lions. They will kill you. I have a special hatred of them because they are in Red Dead Redemption too, and they are exactly the same.

Wisps. They can disappear, need special weapons to fight, and WILL. NOT. STOP. chasing you. Also Spriggans. They heal themselves, they summon BEARS, and they damage my attributes.

In addition, I'm calling this now for Skyrim: Ice Wraiths are going to be the new "AAAARRRGGHH" enemy. They appear in groups (judging from the screenshot), pop up out of nowhere, and probably need special methods to fight them, being non-physical ice elementals.

I make a distinction between difficult enemies and annoying enemies (equivalent to Cliffracers). Mountain lions and Ogres are difficult enemies, yes, but none of them beats Will-o-the-Wisps in terms of pure annoyingness: Wisps are tough, they absorb your attributes, they become invisible, you need special weapons to kill them and they are immune to a lot of things, including poison and silence. Damn, I hate wisps.

I couldn't agree more. Cliffracers were just annoying because of the volume you would run into, but not so much a death threat. Will-o-the-Wisps are truly annoying. Before I finally learned how to kill them (a tactic that I won't reveal here because it falls under hints), I would avoid them like the plague. Now that I do know how to beat them, they are just annoying because they take a while to kill.

In terms of annoyance level: wolves. Good god, wolves.

In the higher levels one swat usually kills them, so they're more of a nuisance than anything. But when you're galloping around on your horse, which they can keep pace with pretty well, swatting at them to make them go away already means you have to stop, get off your horse, kill them, then get back on your horse. Only to have to repeat the process fifty feet down the road.

Since this is about annyoing and not the most difficult foes as someone said, I think I have to go with wisps. They are not, in contrast to what everyone else think, dangerous or difficult to get rid of. To me they have really never been that.
Annoying however, is my name on them :glare:

I guess I have never had a problem with whisps. Lions are fast and stagger my character too often.

I don't find wisps annoying at all.
Even when they turn invisible, they leave a reddish dust trail iirc. I don't know, I just don't find them a pain.

Frost Atronachs.

Stormies aren't so bad. Buffy just hits 'em with a spell to immobilize 'em and bust their poison immunity, then looses an arrow with a multi-damage poison. Then she waits for it to die. One arrow, one kill. EZ.

Frosties have unlimited healing though, so she has to do all that stuff (like she does with a stormie) quickly and get a couple big poisons in them to overwhelm their ability to heal. Ugh, can take a couple, sometimes even three arrows! Using more than one arrow to kill anything makes her cranky. That's why she finds Frosties annoying.

Sprigs are no worries. They can only heal three times per day, and the silly girls cast all three of their healing allotment rapid fire when poisoned, then stand there while the poison still kills them. And of course, they're not even immune to poison.

Wisps are no worries either. Detect life + a bow for the win.

Conjurors and Necrodudes are such soft, squishy targets that she doesn't even waste poisons on them. The key of course is striking unseen. If they see her, she disappears, waits for things to settle down and tries again.
