daggerfall for download?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:07 am

well, i havent been on these forums in... years... i just now saw that daggerfall is up for download... but i have a question, will i even be able to play it?

the computer i use for games is windows XP, 1gb RAM, 2.4GHz... i heard that older games usually dont play on newer computers, so i just want to ask before i decide to download the game or anything...

i never had a chance to play daggerfall before, and im assuming i wont get the chance now, but i figured i might as well ask if i'd be able to play it on such a newer PC.

On XP and later OS, you need to follow the tutorial here if you are used to DOSBox :
http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=21&t=479044&hl=&view=findpost&p=6877868

Or better if you are totally new to DOSBox (seems recommended for you) :
http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1012957

Don't worry if DOSBox is something you never tried, just follow carefully the instructions and you will get started in no time.

um... wow...

i tried reading the recommended link ya posted... and im still lost...

oh well... thanks for answering, but i guess i wont be playing daggerfall afterall, it just seems like WAY too much trouble... even starting the game up after installation sounds like it'll take forever, or be alot of trouble...

seems like the only TES game i will be able to play without much trouble is morrowind at this point.

Yeah, it's really not that much trouble.
Hell, I had a harder time getting System Shock 2 to run. That was a nightmare of annoyances and crashes finally fixed by one added line in the configuration file.

Could you elaborate on this please? I bought a copy of System Shock 2 some time back, but every time I've tried to play it, the game crashed so frequently that I had to give up. I'd love to give it another chance one of these days if there's a fix I was missing.

Well, the game is finicky. One fix for running it on this computer might not get it to run on another computer. Any way, I'll PM you what I did to get it running so as not to get off topic.

Given what this guy is saying, couldn't someone not have recommended a GUI front end like D.O.G or D-Fend Reloaded? To make it easier?! We don't like helping DOSBox newbies do we? We just like to tell them how good we are with the utility!

I've never used them. I'd never even HEARD of them before you did. I'm willing to bet most Dosbox users don't use the frontends.

How could a graphical front end possibly make it simpler? As it is, it's pure cut and paste.

Or we could have just never heard of those, like me.
Any way, don't know how it could be simpler to follow the instructions in alternative installation thread. I know nothing about DOSbox and I got it running in a few minutes from following the steps.

I followed the alternative instructionsd provided by Taemos. It worked :)

The thing is, though, with DOS Commands you'll have to be very very meticulate and precise when you write them in the DOSBox dos command (cmd) line.

Normally I don't like dos commands, but the alternative install instructions helped me a lot :)

And this forum, too, of course.

Using DOS makes me long for the more powerful consoles of UNIX-esque OSes like Linux or Mac. You're right; precision certainly is key, though. Mistyping a command that changes or deletes files can have nasty results.
