Please, no more floating scabbards

Post » Sat Apr 02, 2011 5:56 am

I want to wear regular clothes without my sword floating in midair when it's sheathed. That is all.

Seeing as how quivers are attached to a strap around your body now, scabbards may follow the same way.

????

Are you asking for the sword to check how thick your apparel is?
I would want my longsword to be attached to my waist (extending past my knee), and in a red sheath of silk.

Sheathes are in, you can see them in the GI screenshots. However there is one shot of the player with what looks like a giant two handed claymore on his back. It doesn't appear to be affixed to the character in any way. With that said it doesn't really look bad.

[censored] magnets, how do they work? :P

Easy enough. Just need an attachment node on the clothing model instead of the animation skeleton.

Or a configurable offset if the node absolutely has to be on the animation skeleton.

edit: Yeah the back weapons are odd. The quiver has a very noticeable strap holding it, but neither of the back weapons seems to have any means of attachment. Seems like an odd choice, really.

To be honest I'd rather have the scabbard clip through some of my clothing rather than float next to me in thin air, 'cause that looks really weird.

I would really like to not have orbiting weapons.
Also, I would love the option to keep longswords and other larger one-handed weapons on your back.
A belt sheath just gets in the way when you're a ranger who sprints through the forest to strangle deer with his BEAR hands.

Doesn't really matter much to me. It would add another inch to immersion, but only just.

Honestly, if you could make the weapons orbit your waist, I'd be okay with the floating weapons.

Totally cool for mage characters.

Totally. Floating weapons are a turnoff. They should be sheathed and, judging from the GI shots, some are.

However...can't say the same for all of the weapons. The two handed weapons especially still don't look sheathed.

Actually.
All the screenshots show weapons that can be "sheathed" with straps.

Page 49 snows your quiver on a strap, as well as what looks to be a holster for his short blade.
Page 51 shows a sheath that is visibly over clothes.
Page 52 you see a sheathed weapon that is again over clothes.
Page 52 you also see the claymore over a large x-strap going of the character's back.
Page 59 you see the SAME x-strap over the character's armor, while he is weilding a two-handed axe that would presumably go on his back.
Page 58 you see a mace that is being held onto the waist by a bit of leather that is connected to a belt.

You probably wouldn't sheathe a two-handed weapon anyway. Some kind of hook to hold the handle, but which you could lift the blade through without having to draw it the whole length would be necessary. Or some really freaky long arms.

edit: Yeah, the x-strap is there, but nothing to connect the weapon to the x-strap. I guess it's what we've got, though.

But I liked my Tamriellian Velcro, just like when Link had Hyrulian Velcro in Ocarina of Time.

Yeah, that's true. Nice find guys. :foodndrink:

I'm cool with the x strap.

But it looks like we've been upgraded to increased strength Nordic Straps, or possibly Dwemer Magnets.

I think sheathed weapons look fine, based on the screenshots so far.

Hmm I don't know, it looks like part of the weapon to me. It's connected to that brown bit just above it that doesn't look like it comes off the sword. I could be wrong though.

Good, good point. Dunno why it wasn't in Oblivion - I mean, the DB armour was there to prove they had the hangs of leather belts and straps arrangments. They could have devised something.

Agreed. But only a 1/4" for me.

Get everything related to quests, plot, gameplay, combat, magic, lively cities, dialogue, animations, leveling, draw distance, weather effects, skills, perks, attributes, cooking, mining, woodcutting, jobs, alchemy---get all of that right and I really don't care about the 1 inch gap between my character and his sword. Sorry.

Not the little X on the sword, the full set of straps that goes around his torso with the ring connection in the center of his back. It appears to be the same as the one that appears over his armor in the picture with the big two-bladed axe.
