Looking to buy a turntable

Post » Sun Apr 03, 2011 7:35 pm

So guys I want to start a vinyl collection which will first require buying a turntable. Now, I've been looking around and I've found a bunch on Amazon and a few on Newegg. I don't really want much from the turntable, I just want to be able to play the vinyl records, I don't care if it converts or not or if it connects to my computer. Price is also important, The ones I'm going to list I can buy but I'd prefer not to buy the more expensive ones. And of course, you get what you paid for so a good price to quality ratio would be good.

I'm particularly looking at the Audio Technica ATLP120 Professional Turntable, the Denon DP-300F and the Denon DP-200.

If you just want to play then go retro and buy a reliable used one. Generally newer models will be direct drive and have USB which will drive up the cost. I had an Onkyo for years and was very reliable (had to replace the stylus once in maybe 3 years). Many people I know (including my dad) still have theirs from the early eighties. Replacement parts are also very common (belts, stylus' etc.).

Or if you really want to drop some cash (or just dream), then there is always the http://www.allegrosound.com/Nakamichi_Dragon-CT.html :hehe:

[edit]

Just finished looking over the Stanton 52 & 55. Those appear to be pretty good for the price. I don't think the T.92 would be something you would need since that model is USB and direct drive.

Here is a good site for some comparisons: http://www.testfreaks.com/turntables/

It's quite a bit to take in since the technology is considered archaic by today's audiophiles. But to me nothing beats the sound of vinyl.

The two systems that I'm aware of are; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belt-drive_turntable and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-drive_turntable. The main difference being cost and sound. Belt drive tables have motors which can cost less, and with the belt driving the table it absorbs motor vibrations. Of course you could get into even pricier models with hydraulic dampening, both in load bearing and tonearm.

Anyways, I'm certainly no expert but here is a really good forum with tons of great info. These guys are as serious about vinyl as this forum is about gaming; http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/index.php.

I just heard that DJ turntables aren't very good so I won't be buying the T.52 but I still want to buy a turntable for around that price.

EDIT: Nevermind, I'll just see if I can go to a record store in Baltimore.

EDIT: Nevermind again, I will buy the Stanton T52 and that's final, the reviews I've read from people who own it and sound like they know what they're talking about, have me convinced that it is THE turntable for beginners. I'd also like to send a personal thanks to Miles_Acraeus for the great help he's been.

EDIT: Where do you buy your records at? Online or at a store? What store would sell records? FYE?

I picked most of mine from yard sales, flea markets, pawnshops, or even Craiglist. Check with the local scene before going online for vinyl. Prices tend to be a little higher at places like ebay or amazon. It really will depend on what you want though. Pick an LP and do a search... You'll be surprised what will turn up.

Meh... Take your time. Look around and ask questions. I would recommend registering on the above mentioned forum if you're taking this seriously. You'll have to put this into perspective... It's a hobby, and as such will take some patience to get past the initial introductions and a commitment to do some less than conventional music shopping. But hey, the flip side? Women really dig a guy that can platter an lp old school (as long as 'old school' doesn't mean living in your parents basemant wearing polyester and drinking cheap wine).

Good luck, Bro'

Ridicule? A turntable is one of the coolest things you can have. It's like saying you'll get ridiculed for owning a Ferrari :P

At least for me. I love my turntable. It's an old style Crosby that plays vinyl, CD, tape, radio, and an mp3 player jack. Forgot the name though

Are there any other things I should order along with the Stanton? I found this http://www.amazon.com/Stanton-Magnetics-VC-1-Record-Cleaner/dp/B00006I5UH/ref=pd_sim_MI_2 and http://www.amazon.com/AudioQuest-Anti-Static-record-cleaner-brush/dp/B0006VMBHI/ref=pd_bxgy_MI_text_b.

Will I need both of those? Is there something for cleaning the actual turntable?
