I think my kid jacked up player movement with the CS

Post » Thu Apr 14, 2011 7:32 am

My very inconsiderate teenager has been playing with the Construction Set, and the other day when I sat down to play, I found I was moving about twice as fast as normal.

At first, he said he didn't think his changes would have affected all the saved games; later he said he didn't change anything. Whatever....

Is there any way to check for any changes that could have caused this? I uninstalled the game and reinstalled, but the rocket-fast movement is still there.

Press ? (tilde) after you loaded your saved-game and type the following code:

player.setav speed 50

That should do the trick :D

I would think the first thing to do is to see where things changed. Does your player stats menu show a silly number for the Speed attribute? If so, then the console command in the earliest post will work (although you may want to use a different value if you've earned some of those speed points).

If not, then an ini value for overall game speed may be the issue. If you don't rely on any custom ini settings (e.g.turning borders off), then try deleting your Oblivion.ini file and letting the game build a new one (careful with this, as there's also a default one that it gets those values from!)

What does that command do?

I've checked my stats--they haven't changed. My other teenager checked stats and they hadn't changed, either. It's just that all players are moving about twice as fast as normal.

It will slow down the running speed of your character :)

But your stats did not change, so I recommend you should give Ghastley's suggestion go.

Actually, what it does is set the player's speed to 50. Not really a viable solution.

Yeah, I figured as much.

As I said, just deleting the game and reinstalling didn't fix anything. Maybe there are some user files tucked away somewhere he messed up?

If he did any thing in the CS it should had been saved as a esp file, and since you reinstalled if you did not enable any mods, it might more then likely be the ini file(dont know if there any settings there that would do this)

But try renaming your oblivion ini file then starting the game, it will create a new default one

Rename it to old
C:\Users\Admin\Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini

Indeed, if the game as a whole runs twice as fast it doesn't solve anything.

I think I've solved your speed problem. Go to your INI file @:

C:\Users\Admin\Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini

Open it and look for the following piece of code:

fGlobalTimeMultiplier=1.0000

it should be 1.0000 instead of a higher (or lower) value :)

There is a big chance this will solve your speed problem.

Edit:

I've tested it myself and changing 1.0000 into 6.0000 will speed up the game as a whole considerably.

Since we don't know what other changes might have been made at the same time, a completely fresh Oblivion.ini may be best. Otherwise, we'll be back to diagnosing the next change, and the next one...

BTW, the reason that unintalling and re-installing didn't change anything is that it would have left any corrupt Oblivion.ini in place. That file is not installed, but created by the game the first time you run it. So the uninstall process doesn't remove it, and it gets reused when you start the game after re-installing.

Reinstalling doesn't delete mods made with the CS, and I don't believe it deactivates them either. Look under Data Files in the launcher and uncheck anything you don't recognize.

OK, I'll do that.

The game is installed on a Windows 7 notebook; where will oblivion.ini be on a Windows 7 system?

I should have made it clear before: The NPCs weren't sped up, the entire game wasn't running faster. Only the player character was moving faster--about twice as fast as he should have been able to move.

Dunno, but I think @ the same place in the same folder as in vista or XP machines...

Strange... I will take another peek into the INI file, maybe I will find something..

Edit: the best and easiest way to solve your problem is to create a completely fresh Oblivion.ini

For me, it's C:\Users\Kris\Documents\My Games\Oblivion
That's the same as in Vista, I believe.
