Totally clean Oblivion without any mods

Post » Mon Apr 18, 2011 12:17 am

Hey guys! I played Oblivion 4 years ago, beat the game then totally forgot about it. Now few days ago I watched the teaser for the upcoming Elder Scrolls V and I got really excited , so much that I installed Oblivion so I can give it another try, remind myself with the lore and such. Now the thing is, I installed Oblivion, Shivering Isles, KotN, the newest official patch 1.2. Full package. I was thinking about installing mods but then I thought that would be bad idea. I wanna bug free game. (as I can remember mods causes a lot of bugs and glitches)

Now tell me, is this good idea? Playing totally clean Oblivion? I really don't wanna add bunch of stuffs to the game, causing crashes. Maybe after this playthrough I will try the game with some mods and such.. Give me your input. I wanna hear that I am doing the right thing.. =)

But if you really want a bug free game, wouldn't it be logical to install the Unofficial Patch mods? Just a thought.

I just did that, installed the 3 unofficial patches for Oblivion, Shivering, and KotN, and guess what.. My game stopped responding.. I cant start the game anymore. Only when they are disabled.

Hm, something is wrong here. Mods as passive as the patches shouldn't affect your game in such a radical way, but they did...

At that point, I can ask you tons of questions to narrow the cause of that strange problem or you can ask more specialize help in the mod section (probably quicker that way) or you can tell me to forget it.

Imo, the patches are worth taking the time to make them work. Here's a partial list of what the patches will fix, http://www.baldurdash.org/TESOblivion/UOPFixList.html.

Make sure you didn't activate any unofficial patches for DLC you don't have - that will always cause an instant crash.

Thank you, I reinstalled everything, and this time I unchecked the Dls I dont have from the patch and now its working properly. Yay! Maybe I didn't had to reinstall the game, but nevermind.. xD

The vanilla game has bugs and glitches. You will not escape bugs and glitches by playing without mods.

Sometimes a mod will conflict with another mod. But that can be prevented by doing some research ahead of time.

We can't make this decision for you. Only you can decide if you're doing the right thing.

Mods are a tool to make your gaming experience more enjoyable. You wouldn't use a hammer just because it's sitting there on the workbench in front of you. You would use it when it was appropriate to the job you wanted to do. In the same spirit, I believe a player should first decide what aspects (if any) of the game they want to change, and then find a mod that will change it.

If you enjoy the vanilla game then you are doing the right thing in playing without mods. If you don't enjoy the vanilla game you need to decide what you don't like about it. Then find a mod (or mods) to make the game behave the way you want it to behave. You can come back here and ask, "How can I change this?" and at that point we can come up with mod suggestions.

Good luck!

This. My advice, play the game vanilla first, if you think its the perfect game, or near that - don't get any mods. I played the game vanilla for about 3 years, but when I started to get a little bored, I got mods. They just add a little bit more playability to the game.

I agree with Pseron Wyrd's advice here (probably always a good idea  ).

I played vanilla on PC for quite some time, then began adding some mods to change or tweak things more to suit my taste. I now run about 20 smaller mods. My game is quite bug free - just like it was before I started adding mods. It does take some work to properly use mods, but I find it worth it.

I use OBMM to manage my mods, but successfully installed Wrye Bash not too long ago and am carefully trying to learn more about its capabilities.

I would definitely run the appropriate UOPs then just get a feel for what it is about the game (if anything) you want to change. I find that quite a few of the things I want to change can simply be done with the command console (like naming a horse or changing an NPC you like to essential).

Nobody can tell you what kind of Oblivion experience you will enjoy. For what it's worth, I suggest using the search mechanism at TES Nexus, and do a random look at a few mods in each category just to get a feel for what's out there. Then, figure out if you want that in your game, or not.

You don't have much to worry about. I have a ton of mods and the only big problems I've had (read: only twice- Deadly Reflex and another that replaced shoe textures) were just because I didn't like the mod and when I uninstalled them, Deadly Reflex kept the new first person view I hated (so I reinstalled the game) and the shoe textures would leave big exclamation points where the shoes were supposed to be (also fixed by reinstalling the game).

Any other bugs and glitches are usually known by the mod maker and you'll be informed of them on the site you downloaded from (usually tesnexus) and in the readme. They're usually very clean and even when there are bugs, I've never experienced any that conflict with the actual game, just within the mod itself. For example, I was using Addendum's Vampires (it makes you stronger when you feed rather than weaker) and my sun damage would never go away, even when I fed. So, I just uninstalled it and got another mod that does the same thing with no problem after that.

Granted, I haven't really bothered with really large scale mods that add new huge chunks of land with major questlines, so I can't say much about that. I at least recommend you download some graphics mods (especially Natural Faces and Quarl's Texture Pack 3), plus some ones that fix elements of the game you don't like.

I've played both (started with vanilla, on PC).

Heavily modded Oblivion is many magnitudes better. Simple as that.

But, if you just prefer vanilla, for whatever reason(s), it's still a good game. Just... nowhere near as good as it can be. ;)

Getting used to mods, and mod tools (e.g., Wrye Bash) can take a little while, not to mention some reading - and patience+perseverance helps some...

My games just don't crash. There are no bugs that I'm aware of. And I'm using several hundred mods, some shader edits, and quite a few ini tweaks. :P

Suffice to say, it's totally possible to use lots of mods, and have no problems whatsoever.

So many reasons to try them too - a more lore-friendly experience, new entire lands to explore, small and large quests by the dozen, gameplay tweaks (including difficulty/leveling/magic/combat/stealth, etc., etc.), graphics upgrades you have to see to believe, sound and music upgrades and options, totally wacky stuff if you feel like it, sixy/risque options (if that's your cuppa), realism any which way you like it (e.g., food/drink/sleep/fatigue/crime/communications, etc., etc.) ... and so on.

It's pretty amazing, what you can turn the game into. Either "more of the same", "the game as it should be", "Morrowind-like", "bizarre", "anime-style", "a bit o' sims in the mix", or whatever else you might have in mind. :)

True. With more time it could have been much better. I still prefer it vanilla though, hate it when mods turn out wrong but I′m unable to get rid of it. Even with a reinstall :shakehead:

If you don't remember the game... Play without any mods! then when you complete it you should install mods for a better gameplay, i never used mods... in fact i'm playing in the ps3 so.. its impossible to install mods. But this is my advice, you follow it if you want :)

Return to IV - Oblivion
