FalloutLauncher Virus

Post » Thu Apr 21, 2011 12:12 pm

Hi, New to the forums, so forgive me if there is a similar post to this.

Anyway, Im experiencing an issue with my copy of Fallout 3. When scanning the installation folder with AVG and EmsiSoft Anti-Malware, the FalloutLauncher.exe file pops up with a Trojan Virus. More specifically one named "Trojan.Win32.Agent.bqpu" I allowed both programs to delete the file, but im curious to know how this file could show up as a virus? If anyone could shed some light on my issue, it would be greatly appreciated.

Where did you get Fallout from? A download or was it from the disc?

From the disc. I purchased a copy recently. I also scanned the disc after noticing that my install folder showed an infected file and the same file showed up as being a Trojan Virus.

It's a false flag then. I guarantee Fallout 3 isn't a virus.

Well if thats the case, then explain to me how my system gets bombarded with virus alerts immediately after attempting to run the game? I had to run a System Restore twice from this issue.

Well...Uhh...Yea, that's what happens brother. If you were to get a virus, your computer would be bombarded with virus alerts. You anti-virus thinks Fallout is a virus so it's going to behave in the same matter. However, depending on the severity of the bombardment, it could be possible you have a virus somewhere else in your machine.

When I uninstall Fallout completely, and scan again, no threats are found. Its only when i have Fallout on my machine that i receive alerts. Im aware of how viruses work. So unless theres a new breed of viruses that know how to only appear when a certain game is present, and be completely nonexistent without the game installed, then IDK what else could be the cause. Ive scanned with 3 different programs in safe-mode. When the game is not installed on my system, i get no alerts and no threats. When the game is installed, i get alerts and threats from FalloutLauncher.

You're pretty adamant about this, eh? If you legitimately bought the game the same way thousands of other people have and none of them seem to have a virus, why would your copy, and only your copy, contain a virus in a .exe that thousands of people use?

Once again, I guarantee that FalloutLauncher.exe is not a virus. I'm 100% certain about this. In fact, I'm going to go open and close my FalloutLauncher.exe about 40 times to reassure myself. If I get a virus, I'll come back and tell you...

(I'm thinkin' you're having an issue with your scanners. Are they up to date? Which three did you use? What OS are you on?)

Till this issue is solved, yes i will stay adamant. No game, no virus. Game, virus. I use EmsiSoft AntiMalware (formerly A Squared), Malwarebytes, and AVG Free. They are all up to date. I run Windows 7 Professional 32bit and yes, windows updates is up-to-date.

And my main reason for being so persistent about this issue, is that ive since had to reinstall Windows after 2 System Restores failed to remove the threat. Mostly because the earliest restore point i had was right *after* i had installed Fallout 3. And im guessing that since no one else has bothered to reply with any real assistance, that my best option is to just return the game and be done with it.

* And after reinstalling Windows, "FalloutLauncher.exe" still, yes still, shows up as a virus.

Oddly enough, I use Malwarebytes and AVG Free and neither of those show it as a virus. In fact, I updated them both and just scanned before posting this and the result was zero threats. As far as I can tell, the only difference is I have 64 bit as opposed to 32 bit Win7. Perhaps someone with the 32 bit version and the latest update could give their two cents?
