On the legality of mod compilations

Post » Fri Apr 22, 2011 6:12 am

Manapool did a nice article about this very topic :)

http://www.manapool.co.uk/morrowind-2011-mod-compilation-threatened/

tl;dr: Stop complaining about other people trying to make your mods more accessible to the users! They are tenuously "yours" to begin with. Just be happy for the compliment. I think we can all agree that the Morrowind modding scene would be much more amazing if everyone just got over themselves.

Manapool's article was quite simply ridiculous. Some of the cases they quote aren't even related to the topic.

However, there has been some talk of a revised version of that compilation, created with the approval of all involved parties.

Time will tell, but I hope that is possible. Something of a proof that cooperation is possible, when attempted.

The article linked is misleading. As far as I can tell, the copyright argument was only referring to original files that modders have created using third party tools such as Blender. This whole mess started because people resented having their mods collected with no interaction with them, which should be a matter of courtesy. If anyone cares to debate this with me, feel free to send a PM.
