Song of the Nirnroot

Post » Fri Apr 22, 2011 4:00 am

Once I found the first 50 nirnroots, I was hooked into finding more. A LOT more. The problem I have now is that every time I heard the song of the nirnroot, I go nuts trying to find that illusive plant. Sometimes I'll spend 5 minutes running around in circles trying to find the darn thing. Does anyone have any tips on finding the ones that you simply cannot find but can hear calling to you?

Unfortunately I've never heard the nirnroot sound, strange I know, you could turn off the grass to help you find it.
If you're on PC open the console and type in "tg"
If you're on a console turn the grass level down to 0 (do consoles have options for graphics??)

Yeah something about that nirnroot song. I like searching for those normally I start somewhere around lake rumare and follow the shoreline down to toward layawin. Always get side tracked by other stuff but stick close to the shore and listen carefully they are not too hard to find it gets louder when you get closer. I run in a lot of circles also but I tend to check around rocks and stuff that might not be that easy to spot unless you look at the right angle been a while since I've done it though so I forgot the system I had for hunting nirn.

Nirnroots are barely audible on my PC version. In fact I have to use a mod to make the sound louder. And even then I only hear it if I'm about three or four feet away. The way you describe it, it sounds like it's much, much louder in your game. Maybe it's louder on one of the console versions?

My experience is the same on the 360, I might catch a hint of the sound at about 8 feet, but usually I have to be within 3 feet to hear it clearly.

I have the same problem. Once I hear the sound, everything else leaves my mind and I just have to find the plant. I play on the PS3 and the sound is pretty loud.

On PC, the sound is barely audible (hence the mod that amplifies it, but even so it is not very loud). On PS3, the sound is much louder and clear, allowing you to know that a nirnroot is nearby even if you haven't seen it.

The louder sound on PS3 makes for a very interesting situation:

Spoiler
In one of my recent PS3 playthroughs, I got a nirnroot and took it to an alchemist, just like the quest tells you to do. The alchemist in question was Claudette Perrick in the Imperial City. Funnily enough, Claudette has a nirnroot in her store, and I never really noticed it when I was playing the PC version, because the sound was barely audible. Playing the PS3 version, the distinct hum of the plant was instantly audible when I entered the Gilded Carafe, so I found it really funny when Claudette reacts to the plant as if she never knew it before!

It's the "ice cream man" syndrome experienced by children. When the faint distant song of the ice cream truck approaches they completely lose their minds and focus on nothing else.

I'm using the 360 version of the game, I hear the roots pretty loudly but I also run in a zig zag pattern to cover more ground cause sometimes they are close to the water other times they are a bit further out, closely search any ruins or caves I come across usually something hidden behind a wall.
I always end up finding around 90 of them if I run around all bodies of water I just search in segments at a time. I miss one or two occassionally but if I'm feeling really obsessive compulsive I'll run the same route I took (Is took a word? I use to argue with my teacher about that) in reverse.
