It depends on how you build your character, so it can range from anywhere between 48 and 54.

Technically, the higest level is 255, but no one will go that high. The game would be too difficult to continue due to enemy level scaling.

I've reached level 49 on one character.

255.

To reach this level, you have to max out your major skills and then go to jail so they drop. Then you can level them up again, thus increasing your level.

255, but the horrendous level scaling would probably make ogres have over 250,000 hp or something.

What's fighting like at this level? As others said, all enemy's have insane hp right? Battles must take a looong time.

Dunno. I always grab a few major skill that never get touched, thereby limiting my character's top level. Nothing new after 30 anyway. My current character reached her top level of 20 at 400 hours. At 600 hours now, she is still happily at level 20. :twirl:

I was just thinking about this the other day. What makes your level max out? 100 in all major skills?

There are those who may write paragraphs qualifying it all, but the short answer is: Yes.

My oldest saves from 2006 pegged out at 47 or 49 depending on race and class. I never intentionally tried to make a character like a Bosmer Warrior or an Orc Mage to get to level 50 or higher.EDIT again 75x7/10=52.5,So you just subtract .5 for every five point bonus for a major skill to determine your maximum level without any "cheating" like jailtime skill losses.

Really? wow, If I don't actually try and level up then it takes me about a month or two to get to level 40 (about 40-50 hours), but the fastest ive leveled is all the way to 42 in 18 hours, on PS3 to so no console.

Most of my characters max out at level 48 or 49... however the last one actually made it to 50.

Usually its 48 to 52 but I tend to dislike taking X amount of minutes to kill a particular enemy so I max inbetween Levels 30-42.

Your attributes can hit 100 in your twenties with the vanilla leveling, except for luck which can hit 100 at level 41 with the Thief as a birthsign.Your skills will not hit 100 until you reach higher levels 45+ and the battles can be almost annoying against other characters, most of the levelled opponents(animals, daedra) do not get any stronger after level 25 or so (34 or 35 with SI).

Normally your character then no longer levels up and you just keep playing. This normally happens around levelish 50 depending on the racial/specialization perks your character started with (that's why it can vary some among characters).

For some reason, some players then go to jail a lot and spend loads of time there. Jail can cause your skills to atrophy and decrease. Then these players build up those skills again and level again. Wash (yawn), rinse (snore) and repeat (zzzzzzzzzzz). End result? You get to fight goblin warlords that have 7,000 hitpoints. If you like duking it out with a goblin for an hour to kill him, go for it I guess. :snoring:

I guess the attraction is a carryover from other games. In most games getting to a really high level is a good thing. Not so in Oblivion.

There is nothing new to see or do in the game that cannot be seen or enjoyed by level 30.

My character is currently at 34, and he may get past 50 if I continue to level as unefficiently as I do now.

  • If all your major skills start at 25, it's possible to have 75 * 7 = or 525 major skill increases for a maximum level of 53 (and a half). The first five or ten levels will be quite tough though.
  • Oghma Infinium will give you +10 to three skills, potentially getting you another three levels, bringing it the maximum up to 56 (and a half).
  • Once you reach level 56, you can use a drain skill spell and train a major skill a further 5 points and get to level 57.
  • I haven't tried this, but the "A Shadow Over Hackdirt" quest gives you +5 to Mercantile, potentially increasing your maximum level by another half a level.

To make all this work though, the character has to be designed from the beginning for maximum level, and you have to be very, very careful with your attributes so that you don't run out of attributes to increase before level 57.

Not sure how much monster health levels at high levels, but if you're level 40+, you should have no problems stacking weaknesses and dealing obscene amounts of damage. :)

I think he was level 45 or 46. I haven't yet attained that level with any other character since him.

I miss him. But it took a long time.

I've never taken a character beyond the mid-30s. As mentioned above, the enemy leveling just makes combat tedious for me. There is no logical reason why my improvement in skills and attributes would result in enemies being harder to kill, so the whole thing destroys immersion.

I've played many characters, and most of them do only specific quest lines, or no quest lines at all. When a character advances to the point of having "succeeded" in life, I usually retire him or her. I do this because it is the struggle and uncertainty that makes the game fun for me. I don't delete them, and I often go back and play a session with an old friend, but it's usually just a dungeon dive or two for old times' sake. :)

Hmmmm... thinking about it some more, it would theoretically be possible to level one primary skill to 100 leaving the others at 25. You would be level 8 when you do this.

From there, you would then use the drain skill + training trick to keep levelling that primary skill to 200, adding another 10 to your maximum level (63.5)

...which gives you an extra 10 training sessions for another 50 skill increases in another maxed primary skill, adding another 5 to maximum level (68.5).
...which gives you an extra 5 training sessions for another 25 skill increases, adding another 2.5 to maximum level (71).
...which gives you an extra 3 training sessions for another 15 skill increases, adding 1.5 to maximum level (72.5).
...then use Oghma Infinium for an extra 3 levels (75.5).
...which is purely an exercise in perverted ingenuity.

But as glargg points out above, there's little or no benefit in levelling a character beyond the mid 30's. Your health increases, but so do the monsters'. Also skills past 100 give no additional benefit.

The highest is 60 something, but i prefer to end up at 50 since it is the soft-cap and most of my major skills will be mastered by then.
