Silent Hill: Downpour

Anybody else really excited about this? Cause I feel like the only one.

Seems that the general opinion is that if a Japanese developer isn't making it and Akira isn't doing the music, then the game will automatically be bad.

Akira is a big part of why I'm personally attracted to these games. Although, I don't see how his departure would make the game mechanics bad. Not too keen on that Dexter fellow taking over the score, but, if the video game is good, I'll check it out.

The game sounds decent, I'd like to see more on it though.

The last couple games in the series haven't been the that great, so unless this game gets reviewed well i wont be even considering getting it.

I like what the new composer did with the soundtrack. I also like their artistical direction. We've not seen real gameplay yet, so at least two of three things that make me like a game better, and which people worry about when talking about new Silent Hill creators, are right.

Id don't know, with Silent Hill 5 they completely dropped the ball but with shattered memories they kind of got back on track. Ill have to see when its further down the line. So far what I have seen in trailers is encouraging.

Not at all. Looks more like a generic horror title to me, and from the stuff I've seen, doesn't come across as Silent Hill at all.

I'd be much more enthused about it if it weren't a console exclusive. :P

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106785-Silent-Hill-Downpour-Poisons-Water-With-Horror

from what i read there i gather these likes /dislikes

like:
entirely new storyline
old style silent hill camera
old style silent hill combat (hes not a trained soldier or anything)
finding notes clues and maps

dislikes
not using old locations, one of the things i liked was how each silent hill character would interpret the hospital for example. For this guy the hospital could be more like a mental hospital with locked doors because hes a prisoner. Also toulouca prison would be an awesome level for him, missing that out would be idiotic to say the least.
degerating weapons, idea failed in Silent Hill 4 and the PSP game. Come on team silent!

so they seem to be taking advice from silent hill fans while at the same time making some mistakes.

Yup, haven't played any since The Room, and i only accept that as the spin-off it was originally supposed to be ^_^

Actually i did play the PSP game (forgot the name) after it was ported to PS2, but when i encountered monsters with ranged attack i stopped right there. And as it is now developed by an american company, i don't really care for the new games. Oh well, i'll always the the original trilogy. And the spin-off :P

I disagree with you here, in my opinion every entry in the silent hill series should of course be set in Silent Hill, but not just rehash the same locations over and over again. The whole appeal of the town changing based on an individual's personal demons needs to be played up more instead of having areas like the hospital back just because it's a famous location in the other games. Screw fanservice. Which brings me to my next point, if Pyramid head is in the game, it's going to be terrible. PH has absolutely no place in any game except for 2.

My biggest gripe with fans writing off this game (and the others as well) is that they say the original games are too influenced by Japanese culture when in reality they aren't. Some minor things here and there yes but on the whole the games are big love letters to non-Asian works like Jacob's Ladder and Stephen Kings The Mist among many other things.Hell, the part in SH2 where James hides in the closet from Pyramid Head was ripped straight from Blue Velvet.

I thought about this long and hard and I think your right. I really enjoyed seeing the hospital in the original trilogy but I don't think I'd want to see it again really. Its gotten to the point where I actually know the map to that place, I can visualize it in my head. We do need somewhere more fresh. It will be exciting to see where they go in the town.

As far as pyramid head goes, I agree 110% He does only appear for pure fan service and its kind of sickening. He was James's punisher not anybody else's.

VERY excited. I love the Silent Hill series. The last few weren't as amazing as the first three but still good.

If this game is anything like the original three, sign me the hell up!

Also, if Akira is not doing the music that really svcks! :(

Yeah, I can understand some crossover between places in the original Trilogy of games, which I suppose is because each of the protagonists, while having their own problems, have aspects of them that can cross over, so naturally they'd see similar places.

Downpour seems to be something entirely different though, so new locations is kind of expected.

I quit keeping up with Silent Hill after Homecoming. While I was originally one of the few who said "Just because it's now being handeled by Americans doesn't mean it'll automatically be bad", I hate to admit that the newer games are just terrible and the obsessive Japanophiles were right. It wasn't the fact that Team Silent were Japanese that made the old games good, it was the fact that they were more creative and had a unique perception of American culture and horror. The newer development teams just don't capture the fear and uniqueness of the old games, and often times it seems like they're just copying things from the old games instead of trying new ideas. Take the enemies for example, Team Silent rarely used the same enemy twice. Even though zombified nurses have appeared in every game, the way they were presented was always different. Silent Hill Homecoming had a few good original enemies, but most were just recycled from the mediocre movie of the game.

Anyways it's not just Silent Hill, it seems like the entire Survival Horror genre is dead now. So I've learned to move on to new games like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3. :violin:

I wouldn't necessarily say that "Pyramid Head is in it" automatically equates to "the game is the worst thing since Limbo of the Lost," but...one could argue that it shows a distinct lack of thought on the developers' part in regards to the monsters. I'm playing SH2 for the first time and I love the monster design, if only for the amount of thought that went into it; it's patently obvious that James' twisted, derptacular little brain is somehow giving shape to them. And that's just perfect.

So...then you get to, say, Homecoming, where a variation of the SH2 nurses make a reappearance because...? There's nothing in Alex's story to justify them. (Actually a lot of the monster design gets even more  when you consider that Alex's problems center around his kid brother. Someone clearly did not think their cunning plan all the way through.) There's a few well-designed and sensible monsters (the bosses, mostly), and one of Pyramid Head's appearances not only makes sense but feels justified (vs. the usual fanservice). But for the most part they just make no sense, as if the developers decided to go with whatever looked the weirdest and/or "scariest" (YMMV, obviously), or just went directly to the fanservice tip jar.

On the other hand--wasn't Pyramid Head's appearance supposedly retconned by SH3 to be based on Valtiel? Sooo...you could argue that it's not Pyramid Head who's sold out and keeps randomly appearing in these games, but Valtiel. :P Maybe.

Anyways it's not just Silent Hill, it seems like the entire Survival Horror genre is dead now.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Penumbra would beg to differ. ;)

Not at all. I haven't kept up with this series after Silent Hill 4. It took far too long for five to come out and at that point I already had lost a lot of interest in videogames.
