Old RPG's

Post » Thu Apr 28, 2011 9:26 am

Alright, well I'm looking to buy a good oldie RPG that I've never played before from GOG.com.

The choices are between Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, or Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition.

TBH, I'm leaning more towards NwN, but I figure I'd come here first and see what everyone's opinions are....

Baldur's Gate 2 is, imo, the best game of that particular selection. I would thus definitely go with the Baldur's Gate set - you can even play through both using the same character.

How so? I've been using them for 3 years, and this is the only problem I've ever had with them. GoG is the only website I've encountered that won't let me use them, and I've never encountered any IRL retailer that won't take them.

I completely agree.

If you get both (BG1 and BG2 ~and expansions), you can potentially find the greatest Fallout related easter egg ever made.

Also there is a fan patch that will completely convert your Baldur's Gate assets to be playable in the Baldur's Gate 2 engine ~vast improvement (if slightly buggy: minor).

You also have the option of the many player made mods for NWN/Shadows/Hordes. The original campaign isn't great, but some of the mods are fantastic. Shadows isn't too bad, and I enjoyed Hordes quite a bit.

I'm also joining the fun by recommending the Baldur's Gate saga.

But, also, try Arcanum by Troika. Its original steampunk setting is my all-time favourite after Fallout's. :)

Spoiler
weasels in the pants and a boomstick?

If you go with the BG series, you already have IWD's covered as it's essentially the same game, but a bit more hack-n-slash. Kind of fun if you go for the party tactics aspect.

I go with BG as well

It depends on what kind of game you prefer. If you're looking for a game with a strong story and memorable characters then BG1&2 (particularly 2) would be the best choice. If a mostly hack&slash dungeon crawler is more to your tastes then go for Icewind Dale. If you're looking for the game you'll get the most playtime out of then NWN is probably the way to go due to the massive amount of high-quality player-made modules.

BG and the other Black Isle/BioWare games are too linear and have annoying D&D rules.

Ha I dunno if you guys saw my earlier post, but I can't buy any of the games. Vis Gift Cards don't seem to work with gog, even when I try to pay through paypal. Really don't get it, don't have problems anywhere else with these cards.
